  • "Dongnimmun Arch will forever symbolize the spirit of independence of the 30 million Korean people." - Freedom Newspaper (Jayu sinmun), November 17, 1947

Dongnimmun Arch was erected in 1897 as a symbol of the sovereignty of the Korean nation. Construction of the arch was initiated by Korean-American independence activist Soh Jaipil (also known as Philip Jaisohn, 1864-1951), designed by Russian architect Afanasy Seredin-Sabatin (1860-1921), supervised by Korean architect Sim Ui-seok (1854-1924), and funded by the Independence Club.

The name Dongnimmun means “Gate of Independence,” referring to the autonomy gained in 1895 after China renounced its claims of suzerainty over Korea in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Korea had been a tributary kingdom of China, and thus sent tribute to China and performed ceremonies acknowledging the authority of the Chinese emperor. In return, China sent gifts and offered diplomatic and military protection to Korea. When Chinese envoys would visit Korea, they would be welcomed outside the capital at a special gate named Yeongeunmun. When Korea ceased being a tributary kingdom of China, Yeongeunmun Gate was taken down and Dongnimmun Arch was newly built upon its site. The stone plinths of Yeongeunmun Gate were left standing in front of the arch.

The arched gate is made of granite bricks. On the inside of the left pillar is a staircase leading to the arch’s terrace, which is enclosed by a stone balustrade. On the arch’s keystone is an engraving of a plum blossom, which is a symbol of the Korean Empire. The name of the arch is engraved on the front and back above the keystone in Hangeul and Chinese characters, respectively. The Korean flag is engraved to the left and right of the name.

The arch originally stood about 70 m to the southeast of its current location. It was moved in 1979 due to the construction of Seongsan-daero Avenue.

  • “Dongnimmun Gate symbolizes the independence spirit of 30 million people of Korea forever.” - Freedom Newspaper (Jayu sinmun), November 17, 1947)

Dongnimmun Gate was built at the site of Yeongeunmun Gate where Chinese emissaries were previously received after the demolition of the gate in order to resolve the will of independence. For the construction of the Gate, the Independence Club organized by Seo Jae-pil (1864-1951, Korean political activist and physician) led the donation, along with the voluntary participation of the Korean people. After the approval of King Gojong, construction of Dongnimmun Gate was completed on November 20, 1897.

According to the History of Seoul (Gyeongseong busa), the Gate was designed by Russian architect Afanasy Seredin-Sabatin and constructed by Korean builder and architect Sim Ui-seok. Made of granite, Dongnimmun Gate consists of the rainbow-shaped Hongyemun Gate in the middle and stone steps leading to the top at the left. The keystone of Hongyemun Gate is adorned with a design of plum blossom—which is the symbol of the Korean Empire—while the top of the gate has a stone railing. The front and rear sides of the Gate have signboards on which the inscription “Dongnimmun” is written in Korean and Chinese on each side and the design of Taegeukgi (Korean Flag) is engraved on both sides of the inscription. The Gate was originally located on the middle of a road, which was 70 meters away in the southeast, but was moved to its current location during the construction of Seongsan-daero Avenue in 1979.

The word “Dongnip” of Dongnimmun means “a sovereign state that is capable of standing alone,” not “liberation from colonial rule.” Dongnimmun Gate is a historical monument that embodies the efforts of all Korean people who strived to promote in the world their will to protect the national sovereignty against major world powers that threatened it.
