해설문
국문
호적은 국가에서 인력을 모집하고 세금을 징수하기 위해 만든 공문서이다. 조선 시대에는 3년에 한 번씩 각 군현에서 호적을 만들었는데 주소, 거주 인구, 신분, 연령, 소유 노비 등을 기록한 뒤 여러 권을 만들어 지방관청인 현청과 감영, 중앙관청인 호조에서 보관하였다.
산청 단성현 호적 장부에는 조선 숙종 4년(1678)부터 고종 25년(1888)까지 단성현(현재 산청군 남부) 주민들에 대한 내용이 기록되어 있다. 단성향교에서 1678년부터 1789년까지 기록한 13책을 보관하다 현재 국립경상대학교 고문헌 도서관에서 보관중이며, 19세기의 호적 장부는 일제 강점기에 일본으로 넘어갔다.
산청 단성현 호적 장부는 17~18세기 당시 단성현에 거주하던 주민들의 인구, 신분, 재산 등을 상세히 기록하고 있어 당시 단성현의 사회상을 확인할 수 있는 매우 귀중한 자료이다.

Family Register of Danseong-hyeon Prefecture, Sancheong
A family register, called hojeok in Korean, is an official census document made for the purpose of collecting taxes and human labor needed by the country. During the Joseon period (1392-1910) family registers made every three years in each local district. The register recorded information such as the male head of the household, the household address, number of household members and ages, the family’s social class, and any servants owned by the household. Multiple copies of the register were made to be shared among the local and central governments.
Danseong-hyeon Prefecture is the former name of the southern part of today’s Sancheong area. The family register of Danseong-hyeon Prefecture was kept in the local government office during the Joseon period, and in 1976, the remaining 13 volumes were designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 139. The register records the information from 1678 to 1789 and is therefore a valuable resource in the understanding of the local circumstances and society in the 17th and 18th centuries.
