Gyeongbaeksa Shrine, Sacheon

This shrine is dedicated to Sin Sung-gyeom (?-927), the founder of the Pyeongsan Sin Clan, and his descendant Sin Hyeon (1298-1377), a scholar of the late Goryeo period. Two other renowned scholars, Yi Saek (1328-1396) and Won Cheon-seok (1330-?), are also honored here. The shrine was built in 1626 by three descendants of the Pyeongsan Sin Clan, namely Sin Sang, Sin Hwan, and Sin Geon.

Sin Sung-gyeom was bestowed the title of meritorious subject in 918 in recognition of his contribution to establishing the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). In 927, during a battle between Goryeo and Later Baekje, Goryeo's troops including the founding king, Taejo (r. 918-943), were surrounded by the enemy. Sin Sung-gyeom put on the king's attire to disguise himself as the king so that the king could escape unnoticed. The king was saved, but Sin died in the battle. The Later Baekje soldiers who mistook Sin for the king beheaded him and took his head with them. Saddened by Sin's death, the king ordered a head made of pure gold to be cast and attached to Sin's body for the funeral ceremony.

Every third month of the lunar year, members of the Pyeongsan Sin Clan and local Confucian scholars gather here to perform an ancestral ritual in honor of Sin Sung-gyeom.
