해설문

국문

석조입불상은 돌을 다듬어 만든 서 있는 불상을 말한다. 얼굴 부분은 훼손이 심하여 다시 새겼고, 왼손은 깨져서 원래의 모습은 알 수 없으며 지금 있는 이 불상은 새로 만든 불상이다. 불상의 뒷면에는 옷 주름을 뚜렷하게 새겼으며, 목 아래쪽과 머리쪽에는 광배를 붙이려고 뚫었을 것으로 보이는 큰 구멍이 있다.

이 불상은 땅 위에 있는 화강암에 받침대를 조각하고 그 위에 불상을 세운 형태이다. 받침대는 2단으로 되어 있는데, 윗단은 연꽃모양으로 조각해 놓았고 아랫단은 네모나게 다듬고 옆면에는 안상문을 새겨 놓았다. 불상의 전체 높이는 233㎝, 어깨너비 75㎝이며, 고려시대에 만든 불상으로 생각한다.

Stone Standing Buddha of Bulgulsa Temple

This Buddha statue is presumed to date to the Goryeo period (918-1392).

The head of the Buddha is large in proportion to the body. The Buddha has a large protuberance on the top of his head, which symbolizes his wisdom. The face of the Buddha was severely worn and was later re-carved with the current face. The three creases encircling the neck represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering. His right hand gestures downward with the palm facing outward. His left hand broke off at some point and its original gesture is unknown. The newly made hand is holding a wish-fulfilling jewel in its upward-facing palm. The robes, draped over the shoulders, hang all the way to the ankles.

It is believed this statue once had a halo, as there are two large holes carved into the Buddha’s back where it would have been installed.

The pedestal on which the Buddha stands has two tiers: a rectangular bottom tier and a round top tier with lotus designs.
