해설문

국문

사찰에 의례나 행사가 열릴 경우 깃발을 높이 달아 알렸는데, 그 깃발을 당(幢), 깃대를 당간(幢竿), 긴 당간이 흔들리지 않게 지탱해주는 지지대를 당간지주라고 한다. 보통 사찰에서는 1쌍이 설치되는데 반해 불국사나 황룡사(皇龍寺), 익산 미륵사(彌勒寺) 같은 큰 절에는 2쌍이 설치되어 이들 사찰의 높은 위상과 규모를 짐작할 수 있다.

이 당간지주는 경내 입구 대석단 앞에 동서방향으로 2쌍이 나란히 있다. 동쪽의 당간지주는 통일신라 때 것이지만, 서쪽의 당간지주는 서로 다른 당간지주를 후대에 조합한 것으로 추정된다. 특히 좌측의 당간지주 상부에는 대형 불화인 괘불(掛佛)을 걸기 위한 홈이 있어 조선시대에 괘불지주로 재활용되었음을 보여주는 흥미로운 사례이다.

Flagpole Supports of Bulguksa Temple

Flagpole supports are a pair of stone pillars that fastened a flagpole in place. Such flagpoles were used to mark Buddhist temple precincts by flying flags or to celebrate special events and large gatherings by hanging banners. There is typically one pair of flagpole supports at a Buddhist temple, but at large temples such as Bulguksa or Hwangnyongsa in Gyeongju or Mireuksa in Iksan, there are two pairs.

The two pairs of flagpole supports at Bulguksa Temple stand side by side in front of the entrance to the temple’s main worship area. The flagpole supports on the east date to the Unified Silla period (668-935), but the ones on the west are presumed to have been made at a later time. On the top section of the left flagpole, there is a groove for hanging a large banner painting, suggesting it was used for this purpose in the Joseon period (1392-1910).
