This forest of more than fifty horned hollies is located on a mountain near the coastal area of Docheong-ri, Buan, the northernmost limit of this tree’s natural range. In recognition of its significance in terms of geographical botany, this population of horned hollies was designated as a natural monument of Korea.

An evergreen shrub in the Aquifoliaceae plant family, the horned holly mainly grows in the southern coastal area of the Korean peninsula and Jejudo Island. It can also be found in eastern China. The tree’s bark is light gray and its white flowers bloom in April and May. Due to its distinctive red berries, which ripen between September and October, the horned holly is popularly used as an ornamental tree and Christmas decoration.

Called horang gasi namu in Korean (literally translated as “tiger’s thorn tree”), the shrub gets its name from a folk belief that tigers used this shrub’s glossy, thick, pointy leaves to scratch their backs. It is also traditionally believed that hanging horned holly branches, together with a fish, at the front door on February 1 of the lunar calendar wards away evil spirits.

To further propagate horned hollies in Korea, two additional man-made forests were planted behind the native forest after 1998.
