Former Building of Namseon Electrics, Busan

종합

This building was completed in October 1936 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) to be used as the main headquarters of the Joseon Wasa Electric Company, which operated electric trains, installed lights, and provided gas to the Busan region. From April 1937, it was used as the Busan branch of the Namseon Joint Electric Company, which was formed through the merger of six electric companies to the south of the capital (Seoul). During the Korean War (1950-1953), it was used temporarily by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. After the merger of Gyeongseong Electric, Namseon Electric, and Joseon Electric into the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), it was used as the corporation’s regional headquarters (today’s KEPCO Busan-Ulsan). Since 1988, it has been used as KEPCO’s Central Busan branch.

The building consists of one underground floor and five above-ground floors. The exterior of the first story is finished with granite and features a protruding pilaster entryway. The exterior of the upper stories was finished with tile. The horizontal overhang of the roof features a decorative cornice. Inside the building, various features from the original construction remain, such as the imitation marble of the staircase and balustrades, the heating pipes, and a large safe.

The building was listed as National Registered Cultural Heritage in July 2007 for its value as a well-preserved example of an early 20th-century commercial building.
