편무성 가옥은 보령시 천북면에 위치한 조선 후기의 양반 전통 가옥이다. 이 가옥의 지붕 왼쪽 망새기와에는 ‘옹정8년(擁正八年)’, 오른쪽 내림마루 망와에는 ‘도편수(都片手)’라는 글자가 새겨져 있어 1730년대에 지어진 것으로 추정한다. 전해지는 말에 따르면 원래 17동에 이르는 건물이 있었다고 하나, 현재는 안채만 남아있다.

이 가옥은 팔작지붕의 一자형 고택으로, 정면 7칸, 측면 3칸 규모이다. 내부에는 2칸 크기의 안방과 대청, 부엌이 있고 1칸의 건넌방이 있다. 대청에는 3분합 띠살문을 두었다. 편무성 가옥은 충청도 서해안 일대에 남아 있는 조선 후기 양반 가옥의 안채 모습을 잘 살필 수 있는 사례로서 의미가 있다.

Pyeon Mu-seong’s House

This house is a traditional upper-class residence from the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). Based on the inscription “8th year of the Yongzheng era” found on a roof tile on the left side of the roof, it is presumed to have been built in the 1730s. According to local accounts, the house originally consisted of as many as 17 buildings, but only the women’s quarters remain today.

This building is a linear structure measuring seven bays in width and three bays in depth, with a hipped-and-gabled roof. It consists of a main room, a wooden-floored hall, a kitchen, and another room, and the wooden-floored hall is fitted with lattice doors. The building is an important example for understanding the layout and appearance of the women’s quarters of late Joseon-period upper-class residences in the western coastal area of Chungcheongnam-do Province.
