해설문
국문
무주향교는 선성(先聖)과 선현(先賢)의 뜻을 기리고 인재를 양성하는 지방 교육 기관 역할을 하던 곳으로 조선 태조 때 건립되었다. 원래 무주군청 북쪽에 있었으나 호랑이가 자주 나타나 조선 숙종 18년(1692)에 향로산 서쪽으로 옮겼다. 그러나 그곳의 터가 습하여 제기가 썩고 풍수학적으로 좋지 않아 순조 34년(1834)에 지금의 자리로 옮겼다.
대성전은 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸 규모의 건물이다. 공자를 비롯한 오성(五聖)과 중국의 사현(四賢), 그리고 우리나라 유학자 십팔현(十八賢) 의 위패를 모시고 매년 봄과 가을에 석전대제를 봉향하며, 매달 초하루와 보름에는 향을 피우는 분향례를 지낸다. 향교 경내에는 유생들이 공부하던 명륜당과 양사재, 동재, 서재 등이 있다.

Daeseongjeon, meaning “Hall of the Great Sage,” is the main shrine of a local Confucian school. It houses the spirit tablets of Confucius and other Confucian sages and men of virtue. Because it is the most meaningful space within the local Confucian school, it is generally located atop the highest ground at the back of the school complex to emphasize its significance.
Daeseongjeon Shrine of Mujuhyanggyo Local Confucian School houses the spirit tablets of 27 Confucian sages and men of virtue. Veneration rituals are held here in each spring and autumn, and incense burning rituals are held here on the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month.
Mujuhyanggyo Local Confucian School was first established during the reign of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398) to the north of the present-day Muju-gun Office. In 1692, the school was moved to the west of Hyangnosan Mountain due to the threat posed by tigers in the area. However, this new location was found to be too humid and improper according to the Korean feng shui principles, so the school was moved to its current location in 1834.
영문 해설 내용
대성전은 향교에서 공자를 비롯한 유교 성현들의 위패를 모신 정전이다. 가장 중요한 의미를 지닌 공간이기 때문에, 일반적으로 항교 전체에서 가장 안쪽, 가장 높은 곳에 자리해서 그 위계를 드러낸다.
무주향교 대성전 안에는 유교 성현 27분의 위패가 모셔져 있다. 이곳에서는 매년 봄과 가을에 제례를 올리고, 매월 초하루와 보름에 분향례를 지낸다.
