남극관은 무장읍성 객사의 별관이다. 객사는 임금님을 상징하는 ‘궐(闕)’ 자를 새긴 위패 모양 나무 조각인 ‘궐패(闕牌)’를 봉안하는 한편, 공무를 수행하는 관료의 숙소로 사용되었다. 무장읍성을 세운 뒤 객사가 비좁아 조선 선조 40년(1607)에 성 밖에 남극관을 추가로 세웠다고 한다.
남극관의 남극은 사람의 수명을 관장하는 남극성(南極星)에서 딴 말로 이 별이 보이면 장수한다고 한다. ‘관(觀)’자는 ‘관(館)’과 같은 의미로 큰 집을 뜻한다. 영조 5년(1729)에는 이곳을 퇴직 관료들을 위한 모임 공간인 기로처(耆老處)로 쓰기 시작했다. 오늘날 무장경로당에 기로안(耆老案)이라는 문서가 있어 그 사실을 알 수 있다.
이 건물은 앞면 6칸, 옆면 3칸이며, 옆면에서 바라본 지붕은 八자 모양이다. 현재는 경로당으로 활용하여 기로처의 전통을 잇고 있다.

Namgeukgwan Hall
Namgeukgwan Hall was an auxiliary building of the guesthouse in Mujangeupseong Walled Town. A guesthouse, called gaeksa in Korean, was one of the buildings of the local government office during the Joseon period (1392-1910). The guesthouse included a shrine in the center to hold a wooden tablet symbolizing the king and two rooms to either side which were used as temporary lodging facilities for officials visiting from other regions. The wooden tablet enshrined in each local guesthouse exhibited the king’s sovereignty across the country. To acknowledge this sovereignty, the local magistrate and other officials regularly performed a ceremony in which they bowed deeply toward the royal capital.
Mujangeupseong Walled Town was established in the early Joseon period. As the town grew, the original guesthouse became too small, so in 1607, this building was additionally constructed outside of the town walls. From 1729, it was used as a meeting place by elderly retired government officials.
Next to Namgeukgwan Guesthouse stands a senior citizen center completed in 2015, which continues the tradition of using this site as a gathering place for the elderly.
영문 해설 내용
남극관은 무장읍성 객사의 별관이다. 객사는 고려와 조선시대에 고을 관아에 설치했다. 객사는 가운데에 왕의 전패를 모신 정당이 있고 좌우 양쪽에 숙소로 사용되던 익실이 있다. 객사에 모셔진 전패는 왕의 통치권을 상징하는 것이다. 이러한 통치권을 바탕으로 고을 수령과 관리들은 궁궐을 향해 절하는 망궐례를 행했다.
조선 전기에 무장읍성을 세운 뒤 점차 객사가 비좁아지자, 1607년 읍성 바깥에 남극관을 추가로 세웠다. 1729년부터는 퇴직 관료들을 위한 모임 공간으로 사용되기 시작하였다.
남극관 바로 옆에는 2015년에 준공된 경로당이 있어, 어르신들을 공경하는 공간으로서의 전통을 잇고 있다.
