국문

『지장보살본원경(地藏菩薩本願經)』은 지장보살에게 예배하는 공덕(功德)*을 적은 불경이다. 지상보살은 지옥에서 고통 받는 중생을 구제하여 극락왕생을 실현하게 해 주는 보살로 주로 사찰의 명부전(冥府殿)에 모셔진다. 우리나라에서 죽은 부모를 천도하는 지장재(地藏齋)가 이 경전을 따른 것이다.

화엄사 『지장보살본원경』에는 1616년(광해군 8)이라는 명확한 간행 기록과 시주자들이 수록되어 있고 인쇄 및 보관상태가 양호하다. 특히, 조선 전역을 휩쓴 임진왜란에서 전쟁으로 죽은 고혼(孤魂)들을 천도하기 위해 간행된 것으로 사료적 가치가 있다.

Ksitigarbha pranidhana Sutra (Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva) of Hwaeomsa Temple, Gimhae

The Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva tells the story of how Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva resolved to rescue sentient beings from suffering in hell and help them to be reborn in the Western Paradise. In Korea, a ritual based on this sutra is practiced to pray for the rebirth of one’s late parent.

This copy of the Great Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva kept at Hwaeomsa Temple was printed in 1616 to pray for the rebirth of the lonely souls who died during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. It contains a record of its publication and a list of the names of the publication patrons. Its printing quality and condition are both good.
