국문

『법화영험전(法華靈驗傳)』은 고려 후기 승려 요원(了圓)이 『법화경』의 영험담을 모아 엮은 불교서적이다. 이 책은 중국 당나라 혜상(慧詳)의 『홍찬법화전(弘贊法華傳)』 10권, 송나라 종효(宗曉)의 『현응록(玄應錄)』 4권, 고려 진정국사(眞靜國師) 『해동전홍록(海東傳弘錄)』 4권 및 그 밖의 문헌들에서 기이하다고 생각되는 107개의 영험설화가 실려 있다.

금강사 『법화영험전』은 고려 묘혜대사(妙慧大師)의 지원으로 판각하여 만의사(萬義寺)에 안치하였던 고려본을 판하본(板下本)*으로 하였다. 1534년(중종 29)에 전라도 고창 문수사(文殊寺)에서 다시 새긴 것을 찍어낸 것으로 임진왜란 이전의 불교문화를 알 수 있는 중요한 자료이다.

Beophwa yeongheomjeon (Tales of the Miraculous Power of the Lotus Sutra) of Geumgangsa Temple, Gimhae

The Tales of the Miraculous Power of the Lotus Sutra is a collection of various miraculous incidents that happened while reciting, hand-copying, or teaching the Lotus Sutra. It was compiled by Yowon, a Buddhist monk of the late period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), and includes 107 myths taken from various Buddhist scriptures and treaties from Tang China (618-907) and Song China (960-1279), as well as from Goryeo.

This copy of the Tales of the Miraculous Power of the Lotus Sutra kept at Geumgangsa Temple was printed in 1534 using woodblocks that had been newly made at Munsusa Temple in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, based on the Goryeo edition supported through Master Myohye’s patronage and enshrined in Manuisa Temple. It is an important resource that sheds light on Buddhist culture in the early period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

영문 해설 내용

『법화영험전』은 고려 후기의 승려 요원(了圓)이 『법화경』을 암송, 필사, 강설함으로써 생긴 여러 영험한 사례들을 모아 엮은 책이다. 중국 당나라, 송나라, 고려 등의 여러 경전과 논서에서 발췌한 107개의 영험 설화가 실려 있다.

금강사가 소장한 『법화영험전』은 고려시대 묘혜대사의 지원으로 판각하여 만의사에 모셨던 고려본을 바탕으로, 1534년에 전라북도 고창 문수사에서 다시 목판을 새기고 찍어냈다. 조선 전기의 불교문화를 알 수 있는 중요한 자료이다.
