Geumsujeong Pavilion

This pavilion, located atop a cliff overlooking Yeongpyeongcheon Stream, was first established by Kim Myeong-ri during the middle period of the Joseon period (1392-1910). Originally, it was named Udujeong, meaning “bull’s head pavilion,” because the shape of the terrain on which it was built resembles a bull’s head according to feng shui. The pavilion came into the possession of the renowned poet and calligrapher Yang Sa-eon (1517-1584), who renamed it Geumsujeong, literally meaning “golden water pavilion.” It came into the possession of the Andong Kim clan, and was repaired various times, but was burnt down during the Korean War (1950-1953). A new pavilion was built in its place in 1989.

Many poets and writers are said to have visited this pavilion and other scenic spots in the vicinity to enjoy the view and create literary works. Signs of such activities still remain, such as the letters written by Yang Sa-eon inscribed on the rock cliff to the northeast of the pavilion. The wooden name plaque of the pavilion was made from the rubbing of this rock inscription.
