국문
송림사 팔상도는 석가모니의 생애를 8폭으로 그린 그림이다. 현재는 5장만 남아있다.
제작한 시기 및 그린 승려는 알 수 없지만 화풍을 통해 19세기에 그려진 것으로 추정한다. ‘충청도 공주 마곡사’라는 글씨가 남아있어 마곡사 팔상도 제작 초안으로 보기도 한다.
이 팔상도 초본은 나무와 전각 등을 이용해 공간을 나누고 나무, 바위, 구름 등을 명확하고 정밀하게 묘사하였다.
팔상도 초본에 등장한 이모구도(姨母救度)*는 조선 후기의 다른 팔상도에서 찾아볼 수 없는 장면이다. 이를 통해 새로운 형식의 팔상도라 할 수 있어 미술사적 가치가 높고, 조선 후기 팔상도 연구에 귀중한 자료로 평가된다.

Sketch of the Buddhist Painting of Songnimsa Temple, Geumnam (The Eight Great Events)
These are the preliminary sketches for an eight-panel painting of the Eight Great Events, which is a motif of Buddhist painting which depicts the eight major events in the life of Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha who lived in ancient India. Currently, only five of the eight panels remain.
It is unknown when or by whom these sketches were made, but based on their artistic style, they are presumed to have been made in the 19th century during the Joseon period (1392-1910). One of the five panels features an inscription suggesting that these sketches were made for a painting of the Eight Great Events that was to be enshrined in Magoksa Temple, Gongju.
The visual space is well divided using trees and worship halls, and elements such as trees, stones, and clouds are depicted clearly and exactly. One of the sketches depicts the scene of Mahapajapati Gotami, Sakyamuni’s aunt and the first Buddhist nun, begging and crying upon to be ordained, which is a scene not found among other paintings of the same motif and period. Thus, this painting is of great value in the study of the changing depictions of the Eight Great Events in the late Joseon period.
