해설문

국문

군산 은적사 목조아미타불 좌상은 1666년 혜정(惠淨)이 제작하였다. 제작 후 김제 금산사에 봉안 되었던 불상으로 이동경로 및 시기는 확인할 수 없지만 현재 군산 은적사에 위치해 있다.

불상은 두꺼운 가사로 온몸을 가리고 있으며, 얼굴, 손, 발, 가슴 등 일부분의 육신만 드러내고 있다. 몸에 비해 머리가 큰 편이며, 머리는 앞으로 약간 숙이고 있다. 특징으로는 귀의 삼각와가 깊게 파여 있으며, 좁은 내곽이 삼각형으로 되어있다.

발원문을 통해 조성시기와 조각가, 봉안처, 화주 등을 파악할 수 있는 불상으로 조선후기 불교조각사와 불상양식을 볼 수 있는 중요한 문화자산이다.

Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Eunjeoksa Temple, Gunsan

This wooden statue depicts Amitabha, the Buddha of Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West. The statue was made in 1666 by the monk artisan Hyejeong to be enshrined at Geumsansa Temple in Gimje. When and why the statue was moved to Eunjeoksa Temple remains unknown.

The Buddha is depicted in a seated position with his legs crossed. He wears his robes over both shoulders. His head, which tilts slightly forward, is disproportionately large compared to his body. The concaves at the tops of his ears are depicted deeply.

Its known year of creation, creator, and place of enshrinement, as well as its excellent condition, make it a valuable example of Buddhist sculpture from the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

영문 해설 내용

이 목조 불상은 아미타여래를 나타낸 것이다. 아미타여래는 극락정토의 부처로, 그의 공덕을 기리고 이름을 염(念)하는 모든 중생들은 극락세계에 왕생할 수 있다고 여겨진다. 이 불상은 1666년 조각승 혜정이 만들었으며, 원래 김제 금산사에 봉안되었던 불상이다. 은적사로 옮겨진 시기나 경위는 알 수 없다.

불상은 결가부좌를 하고 앉아있으며 옷은 양 어깨를 감싸고 있다. 머리는 약간 앞으로 숙이고 있는데 몸에 비해 큰 편이다. 귀에는 삼각와가 깊게 파여 있다.

조성 시기, 조각가, 봉안처 등을 파악할 수 있으며 보존상태가 좋아, 조선 후기 불교조각을 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 유산이다.
