Gugangseowon Confucian Academy

A Confucian academy, called seowon in Korean, is a private education institution of the Joseon period (1392-1910) that usually combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a lecture hall.

Gugangseowon Confucian Academy venerates the scholar and politician Yi Je-hyeon (1287-1367, pen name: Ikjae), who served as chancellor, the highest government position during the Goryeo period (918-1392). The academy was first established as a portrait shrine during the reign of King Gongmin (r. 1351-1374). In 1686, during the Joseon period (1392-1910), it became a Confucian academy. It was demolished in the late 19th century when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. It was rebuilt by local Confucian scholars in 1904.

The complex consists of a lecture hall to the front left and a shrine to the rear left, with various auxiliary buildings such as a ritual preparation hall and repository to the right. Kept in the repository are the printing woodblocks for the Complete Works of Yi Je-hyeon (Ikjae jip). A veneration ritual is held at the shrine in the second and eighth lunar months.
