Ancient Tomb in Chiram-ri, Gochang

This ancient tomb in Chiam-ri Village dates to the late 5th century during the Baekje period (18 BCE-660 CE). Measuring 56 m in length and 6.6 m in height, the tomb consists of two connected earthen burial mounds, one round and one square, which together create a keyhole shape. The shape is also said to resemble a janggu, the traditional Korean double-headed drum. Fifteen of these keyhole-shaped tombs have been discovered thus far in Korea, all in the southern area of the peninsula. This tomb in Chiam-ri is the northernmost, oldest, and third largest among them.

Generally, keyhole-shaped tombs are situated on flat land or on low hills, but this tomb was built on a mountain slope. This tomb also has a ditch and double embankment around its earthen mounds, which is a unique feature. Inside the round burial mound, a burial chamber was found in severely damaged condition. It is presumed to have been a stone chamber tomb with corridor. The mounds were built by packing several layers of stones and dirt. Cylindrical pottery was placed around the edge of the mounds for decoration. Artifacts excavated from the tomb include Baekje earthenware, metal arrowheads, and horse-riding accessories, as well as earthenware from Japan.

Many keyhole-shaped tombs dating from the 4th to 6th centuries have been found in Japan. This suggests that there were cultural exchanges between the southern area of the Korean Peninsula and Japan at the time.
