해설문

국문

원래 배반동의 장골 사자사(師子寺) 터에 무너진 채로 있던 것을 1936년 경주역을 지금의 위치로 이전하면서 그 기념으로 옮겨와 복원하였다.

2층 바닥돌에 3층으로 몸돌을 올린 신라의 일반적인 석탑 형태이다. 바닥돌 위에 몸돌받침 없이 곧바로 몸돌을 올렸다. 1층 몸돌은 폭에 비해 높이가 높고, 2·3층 몸돌은 폭은 거의 줄지 않은 채 높이만 급격히 줄어 전체적으로 날렵한 형태를 띠고 있다. 꼭대기에는 머리장식 받침돌 위에 그릇모양의 타원형 장식(覆鉢)*을 만들어 올렸다.

통일신라에서 고려로 넘어가는 석탑양식의 변화를 보여주는 탑으로 평가된다.

영문

Three-story Stone Pagoda in Hwango-dong, Gyeongju

A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. Although not all pagodas contain the true remains, they are nonetheless worshiped as sacred places that enshrine the Buddha.

It is unknown when this stone pagoda was first built, but it was found collapsed at the former site of Sajasa Temple near the tomb of King Hyogong (r. 897-912), the 52nd ruler of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE–935 CE). In 1936, the pagoda was re-assembled at the current location to commemorate the opening of the new Gyeongju Station.

The pagoda consists of a two-tiered base, three sets of body and roof stones, and part of a decorative top. The first-story body stone is considerably taller than the two body stones above it, which gives the pagoda a dynamic appearance. The corners of the base and the body stones are carved to look like pillars, and the underside of the roof stones are carved into four tiers to resemble eaves.

영문 해설 내용

불탑은 부처의 유골을 모신 상징적인 조형물이다. 모든 탑이 진신사리를 모신 것은 아니지만, 부처를 모신 신성한 곳으로 여겨 신앙의 대상이 된다.

이 삼층석탑은 언제 조성되었는지 알 수 없다. 원래 효공왕릉 부근에 있는 사자사터에 무너진 채로 있었다. 1936년 경주역을 지금 위치로 이전하는 것을 기념하여, 탑의 부재들을 경주역 광장으로 옮겨와 다시 세웠다.

탑은 2층의 기단, 3층의 몸돌과 지붕돌, 머리장식 일부로 이루어져 있다. 1층 몸돌의 높이에 비해 2층부터는 급격히 높이가 낮아져, 전체적으로 날렵한 형태를 띠고 있다. 기단과 몸돌의 모서리에는 기둥 모양을 새겼고, 지붕돌 아래에는 4단의 받침을 두었다.
