해설문

국문

임진왜란 때 부산첨사로 큰 공을 세운 월암 김호(月菴 金虎, 1534~1592) 장군의 생가로 건물은 17세기 전후에 세운 것으로 추정된다.

이곳은 신라 때의 절터라 전해지는데, 주변에 통일신라시대 것으로 보이는 석조물들이 남아있는데, 마당의 우물은 지금까지도 사용되고 있다.

건물은 안채와 아래채, 사당(祠堂)이 있고, 사랑채는 터만 남아있다. 안채 건물은 정면 5칸의 단순한 ‘一’자 구성이지만 옛 법식을 따르고 있다. 대청 앞에 문짝을 달았다. 아래채는 초가지붕이고, 굴뚝을 부뚜막 한쪽에 설치한 구성이 특이하다. 안채 오른쪽 뒤편의 사당은 맞배지붕으로 안쪽을 모두 터놓은 통칸이다. 낮은 흙담을 두르고 문을 달아 공간을 구분하였다.

영문

Woram Head House, Gyeongju

This is the head house of the descendants of the military official Kim Ho (1534-1592, pen name: Woram). A head house is a residence passed down by the male successor of a family lineage. It is presumed to have been built around the 17th century.

This house is said to stand on the former site of a Silla-period Buddhist temple. Pieces of stonework presumed to date to the Unified Silla period (668-935) have been found in the vicinity. There is also an old well in the yard which is still used to this day.

The house consists of a women’s quarters, an auxiliary quarters, and a shrine. There used to also be a men’s quarters, but it no longer remains. The women’s quarters has a traditional layout with a wooden-floored hall in the center, an underfloor-heated room on each side, and a kitchen at the far left end. The auxiliary quarters has a thatch roof with a chimney at one end, which is an uncommon feature. The shrine is located to the rear right of the women’s quarters. It is surrounded by an earthen enclosure wall to separate it from the rest of the house.

Kim Ho passed the state examination in 1570, but retired early to his hometown of Gyeongju. Upon the outbreak of the Japanese invasions of 1952, he led a civilian army in defense of the Gyeongju area and was make a special army officer. However, he was ultimately killed.
