해설문
국문
등나무는 덩굴성 목본(木本)식물로 주로 정원수로 심는다. 바구니를 만드는 데 쓰기도 하고 어린 잎이나 꽃은 무쳐 먹기도 해서 등꽃나물, 등화채(藤花菜)라고 한다.
이곳은 신라 때 왕이 신하들과 더불어 사냥을 즐기던 곳으로써 용림(龍林)이라 부른다. 이 등나무는 총 4그루가 2그루씩 가까이에 있어 팽나무를 안고 얽히고 설켜 있다.
이 나무에 애달픈 사랑이야기가 전해온다. 신라 때 이 마을에 예쁜 자매와 이웃집 총각이 있었다. 두 자매가 같이 이 총각을 사모하였다. 전쟁터에 나간 총각이 전사했다는 소식을 듣고 자매는 울다가 지쳐 연못에 몸을 던져 죽었다. 그 후 연못가에 두 그루의 등나무가 자라기 시작했다. 그러나 죽었다던 옆집 총각은 화랑이 되어 돌아왔는데, 자매의 사연을 듣고는 자신도 연못에 몸을 던져 자매들의 뒤를 따라 팽나무가 되었다고 한다.
어떤 일이나 사정이 서로 복잡하게 얽혀 화합(和合)하지 못하는 상태를 갈등(葛藤)이라고 하는데, 갈등은 칡과 등나무이다. 칡은 줄기를 왼쪽으로, 등나무는 오른쪽으로 감고 올라가기 때문에 ‘서로의 이해관계가 얽혀 해결의 실마리를 찾는 것이 어렵다’라는 의미가 된다.
영문
Wisteria of Oryu-ri, Gyeongju
Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda (Wild.) DC.) is a woody, deciduous vine in the legume family, Fabaceae. Its long flower clusters bloom in early- to mid-spring. It is popularly used as an ornamental plant in gardens. Its vines are used to make baskets, and its young leaves and flowers are used in side dishes.
These wisterias are located next to a small stream near the entrance to Oryu-ri Village. Although it appears as if there are two trees, there are actually four trees together in pairs and are tangled around a Japanese hackberry tree.
There is a legend about the origin of these trees. It is said that during the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE), there were two beautiful sisters who lived in this village, and they both had an affection for the handsome bachelor next door. The young man was sent to war and, when news arrived of his death, the sisters jumped into a pond together and drowned themselves. It is said that after their deaths, two wisterias began to grow next to the pond. However, the young man had not died and had instead become a great youth warrior. When he heard that the sisters died because of him, he too jumped into the pond and drowned himself. In this spot, it is said that the Japanese hackberry began to grow.
