Houchong Tomb

This tomb is part of the Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex. It is presumed to date to the early 6th century and belong to a man of the royal family of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE).

The name Houchong means “Tomb of the Lidded Bowl,” which comes from a lidded bronze bowl excavated from the tomb in 1946. This tomb, together with the adjacent Eullyeongchong Tomb, was the first ancient tomb to have been excavated by Koreans after the end of the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945).

The tomb is a wooden chamber tomb with stone mound. The chamber was made by digging a 2 m-deep pit, creating the wooden chamber and placing the coffin inside, covering it with stones, and then with soil to create an earthen mound. The body was placed in the chamber with his head to the east. Various accessories worn by the deceased were excavated from the tomb.

The lidded bowl after which the tomb is named is of particular importance as it includes an inscription which identifies its year of production as 415 and states that it was made on the order of King Jangsu (r. 413-491) of the neighboring Goguryeo kingdom (37 BCE-668 CE) to commemorate the funeral of his father King Gwanggaeto the Great (r. 391-413). It is uncertain how this bowl came to be buried in a Silla tomb.
