Style Guide
See below for general information on translation and formatting practices. This can be used as a guideline in future translations.
Original Text
- 원문 판본을 기준으로 구두점을 표기하였다.
- 구두점이 표기된 원문 우측에 원문 이미지를 배치하였다.
English Translation
- Though the original text does not have paragraphs, the English text was split into paragraphs for ease of understanding the content.
- The original text has circles to denote subsections. These have been kept in the English text.
- Any words added to the text by the translator to aid in the reader's understanding have been added inside parenthesis.
- The original text had commentary added in small characters. This is denoted in the English text with a smaller, grey colored font.
- Key terms have been bolded.
- Editor's notes have been added via footnotes.
- Translations follow the sentence structure of the original text as much as possible.
- To see how a particular term was translated, check the glossary.
- Farming tools were kept as romanizations as they vary slightly from similar tools available in other countries.
- Calendar terms were changed to English whenever possible but editor's notes were added to clarify when necessary. More information is also in the glossary.
Glossary
- The glossary has been divided by theme: Plant varieties, farming tools, types of land, measurements, farming methods.
- Eventually, each term will have its own page, but before a proper naming convention must first be created.
- Glossary uses a template to list romanizations, alternate translations etc.
- Other explanations/definitions and multimedia are listed as regular text
- Glossary terms should be in English, or in a revised romanization if no exact translation for English is available.
- The first word of a glossary term should be capitalized, but the rest lowercase

Future Goals
There are a number of ideas we have for how to improve the translation, the glossary, and the wiki design for this Nongsa jikseol project. Our ideas for what we would like to do in the future are as follows.
Translation
- Make the Korean translation more consistent, as we primarily edited the English text this semester
- Double-check for consistency of phrases and words between translations and chapters in all languages
Glossary
- Separate pages for each glossary term
- Links from chapter to glossary term and glossary term to chapter where it appears
- Pop-ups when you hover above a glossary term to show the basic definition before the user clicks on the link
Chapter Pages
- Templates, such as info boxes, on each chapter for basic info about the farming process for that chapter, such as varieties of plants, farming timeline, etc.
- Research a way so that when a sentence in one language is hovered above, the corresponding sentence in the other language is highlighted, like in Google Translate.
Overall
- Overall timeline of the farming process or cultivation
- Decide upon a citation format (MLA, APA, etc.
- Do more deliberation as to who the future users will be and what kind of information they seek and need
