흥복전

Definition

흥복전은 왕의 후궁들이 살던 공간인 빈궁(嬪宮)이다. 궁궐 내 여성 내명부에 적절한 소임을 주고 독립된 건물 채인 각 전(殿)에 배속시키는 본부 역할을 했으며, 외국 사신을 만나는 편전으로도 활용됐다. 신정왕후 조대비(趙大妃, 1808~1890년)가 이 곳에서 승하하였다. 1917년 화재로 소실된 창덕궁을 중건하기 위해 흥복전 일곽이 철거됐으며, 그 자리에 조선총독부는 일본식 정원을 조성하였다.
