개요

서울대학교 사범대학 교수 및 학장, 한국교육학회 초대회장 등을 역임하였으며, 『철학개론』, 『현대정신사』, 『윤리전서』 등을 저술한 철학자 · 교육학자.[1]


생애

출생

본관은 광산. 호는 서은(西隱). 평안북도 용천 출생.[2]


업적

1953년 한국교육학회 초대회장, 유네스코한국위원회 교육분과위원장, 1959년 도덕재무장운동(MRA) 국제대회 한국대표를 지냈다. 1960~1962년 단국대학교 학장, 1963~1964년 국가재건최고회의 의장 고문, 1971~1974년 경남대학교 학장을 역임하였다. 문화훈장 대통령장, 국민훈장 목련장 등을 받았다. 저서에 《현대정신사》 《윤리전서》 《남강 이승훈(南岡李昇薰)》이 있으며, 잡지 《이성(理性)》을 19집까지 발행하기도 하였다..[3]


사상

그러나 이 모든 것과 아울러 기억되어야 할 것은 그가 저술 및 강연 등을 통하여 벌인 새로운 윤리 운동인 것이며， 그가 세운 동방 아카데미는 서은의 꿈이요， 이상의 현현이기도 하였던 것이다. 그는 남강(南周) 이승훈(李昇薰， 1864~1930)의 수제자로서 남강 사상의 후계자라 하겠다. 남강과 도산(島山) 안창호(安昌浩， 1878~1938)가 강조한 바 신민주의 (新民主義)를 바로 이어받았고， 서은 스스로는 동양 부홍의 논리를 펼쳤으니 신동방주의의 교육 사상가요， 가히 교사의 교사라하겠다. [4]






연구

국민 윤리 운동의 선구자

서은은 명저 남강 이승훈(1964)을 남겼거니와 그 스스로는 나아가 새로운 윤리 운동의 선구자가 되었다. 그는 덕스럽고 밝고 힘있는 사람이 되어야 한다고 가르쳤다. 1946년경에 이미 소책자로 윤리강령을 출간하였고， 이는 다시 판을 달리하여 1962년에 제작 · 배포하기도 하였다. 이 윤리 강령이 라는 소책자는 어떻게 보면 서은의 새로운 윤리 운동의 원형이라고 보아도 좋을 것 같다.[5]


동서 사상의 한국화

서은 사상은 단적으로 말하여 동서 사상의 한국화라 하겠다. 이는 그의 사상적 형성 과정을 살펴보면 수긍이 가리라고 본다. 그는 소크라테스， 플라톤， 칸트，페스탈로찌， 그 중에서도 특히 ‘칸트 연구’ 에 주력하였다. 한편， 공자， 석가， 노자， 예수 등 유교， 불교， 도교，기독교 등에 정통하였다.[6] 한마디로 말해서 서은은 동서 사상의 한국화에 힘쓴 ‘동방의 철인(哲A)’ 이시다. 철학 관계서로는 철학개론( 1954)과 신고 철학개론 (1960)이 널리 읽혀졌다.[7]
