화려하게 장식된 말을 탄 압독국 지배자

임당 2호분은 두 개(남호, 북호)의 무덤을 연이어 조성하여 완성한 대형 연접분이다. 두 무덤은 모두 암반을 굴착해 만든 덧널무덤(암광목곽묘)으로 다른 대형분과 달리 으뜸덧널과 딸린덧널을 나란히 배치한 ‘明’자형 구조를 보이는 점이 특징이다.

무덤 내부는 도굴과 훼손으로 일부 파괴되었으나, 북호 으뜸덧널에서는 덧널을 안정적으로 받치기 위해 설치한 나무 받침 시설이 온전하게 남아 있어 당시 무덤 축조 기술의 수준을 보여준다. 특히 북호의 딸린덧널에서는 순장자로 추정되는 사람뼈와 함께 화려한 금동제 말갖춤이 출토되었다. 말안장과 발걸이, 각종 장식 마구는 금동이나 은제로 제작되었는데, 특히 금동판을 덧댄 발걸이와 용무늬를 장식한 금동 말안장은 경주의 황남대총, 금관총, 천마총 등 최고 위계 고분 출토품과 비교할 수 있다. 이처럼 2호분은 장식 말갖춤의 조합과 완성도에서 당시 지방 지배층 가운데서도 최상위에 속하는 인물의 무덤으로 평가되며, 화려하게 치장한 말을 타고 권위와 위세를 드러낸 압독국 지배자의 존재를 상징적으로 보여준다.

Imdang Tomb No. 2 / An Apdok Ruler on a Lavishly Adorned Horse

Imdang Tomb No. 2 is a large connected tomb formed by adjoining two burials, the South Tomb and the North Tomb. Both are wooden chamber tombs constructed by cutting into bedrock. Unlike other large tombs, they feature a distinctive layout in which the main and subsidiary chambers are arranged side by side.

The interior of the tombs was partially damaged by looting and disturbance. However, in the main chamber of the North Tomb, a wooden support structure remains intact, demonstrating the sophistication of tomb construction techniques at the time. In addition, the subsidiary chamber of the North Tomb contained human remains, presumed to be sacrificial burials, along with elaborately decorated gilt-bronze horse trappings.

These horse trappings include saddles, stirrups, and other ornaments made of gilt bronze or silver. Notably, the gilt-bronze-plated stirrups and a gilt-bronze saddle decorated with dragon motifs are comparable to those found in high-status Silla tombs in Gyeongju, such as Hwangnamdaechong, Geumgwanchong, and Cheonmachong. Based on the composition and quality of these ornate horse trappings, Imdang Tomb No. 2 is thought to have belonged to a figure of the highest rank among local elites. It illustrates the presence of an Apdok ruler who displayed authority and prestige through richly adorned horses.
