옥정사는 인조 2년(1624) 이후 남한산성을 수축할 때 새로 지은 8개의 사찰과는 달리 신라 때부터 있었던 사찰이라고 전해진다. 남한산성의 사찰은 모두 10개가 있었는데, 사찰마다 담당 구역인 신지가 구획되어 있었다. 그중 옥정사의 승군들은 북문을 담당하였다. 특히 황해도의 승군이 옥정사에 머물렀다는 기록이 전해진다. 구한말, 옥정사는 남한산성의 다른 사찰들과 같이 항일 의병 활동의 중심지라는 이유로 일제에 의해 파괴되어 지금은 폐사지로 남아있다. 옥정사라는 이름은 절 뒤편의 우물이 커서, 큰 가뭄에도 마르지 않고 옥 같은 샘물이 솟아났다 하여 붙여진 이름이다.

옥정사지는 세계문화유산 남한산성의 탁월한 보편적 가치 중 하나인 군사경관(승영사찰지)에 해당한다.

Okjeongsa Temple Site

This is the former site of Okjeongsa, one of the ten Buddhist temples of Namhansanseong Fortress. Located to the east of the fortress’s northern gate, this temple is said to have been founded in the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE). The name Okjeongsa means “Temple of the Jade Well” and refers to the large well behind the temple, which was considered as precious as jade because it produced significant water even during major droughts.

Each of the fortress’s temples was responsible for protecting a part of the fortress. It is said that Okjeongsa Temple was occupied by soldier-monks from Hwanghae-do Province and was in charge of defending the northern gate. At the turn of the 20th century, Okjeongsa, together with other temples of the fortress, became a center of the anti-Japanese resistance and was eventually destroyed by the Japanese authorities.

When Namhansanseong Fortress was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, its various structures were classified as part of its military, administrative, or folk landscapes. Okjeongsa Temple was recognized as an integral component of the fortress’s military landscape.

영문 해설 내용

이곳은 남한산성 내에 있던 10개의 사찰 중 하나인 옥정사가 있던 자리이다. 남한산성 북문의 동쪽에 위치한 옥정사는 신라시대에 창건된 것으로 전해진다. 옥정사라는 이름은 “옥 같은 샘물의 사찰”이라는 뜻으로, 절 뒤편에 큰 우물이 있어 큰 가뭄에도 마르지 않고 물이 솟아났다 하여 붙여진 이름이다.

남한산성에는 사찰마다 담당 구역이 배정되어 있었다. 옥정사에는 황해도의 승군들이 머물렀다고 전해지며, 이 승군들은 남한산성 북문의 방어를 담당하였다. 19세기 말 20세기 초 옥정사는 남한산성의 다른 사찰들과 같이 항일 의병활동의 중심지가 되었고 이후 일제에 의해 파괴되었다.

2014년 남한산성이 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재되던 당시 남한산성의 여러 경관 요소를 군사, 통치, 민속으로 구분하였는데, 옥정사터는 그중 군사경관에 해당한다.
