Tomb of Sin Ik-hui, Seoul

This is the tomb of Sin Ik-hui (1894-1956), a politician and independence activist during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945).

Born in Gwangju in Gyeonggi-do Province, Sin Ik-hui graduated from the Governmental Hanseong Foreign Language School and studied at the Department of Politics and Economics at Waseda University in Japan. In 1918, he became involved in the independence movement after having been inspired by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson’s principle of national self-determination. He met with independence activists in China and, upon his return, led the March First Independence Movement of 1919. After this, he went to Shanghai to seek refuge from the colonial suppression where he participated in the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. He drafted the constitution of the Provisional Government and led the Provisional Government in charge as deputy manager of internal affairs, attorney general, and minister of foreign affairs.

In addition, he presumed that armed activities for independence were needed in solidarity with China, so he joined the Chinese military and became a lieutenant general of their inland army. In 1929, he made the Korean Revolutionary Party to enhance the abilities of the independence movement. In 1935, the National Revolutionary Party was made by merging five political parties. In 1938, he made the Korean Volunteer Corps and participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). After this, the Korean Volunteer Corps was incorporated into the Restoration Army. In 1944, he played a role in the making of a coalition cabinet, becoming head of home affairs.

Upon the liberation of Korea in 1945, Sin Ik-hui returned to Korea for the first time in 26 years. He opposed the trusteeship of Korea by the U.S. and Soviet Union and led the activities opposing the Communist International union. He also established Kookmin University, becoming its first dean. At the Constituent Assembly in 1948, he was elected as the first vice-chairman of the assembly, which led him to continue serving as the third chairman of the National Assembly. In 1955, he founded the Democratic Party, and in 1956, he ran for the presidential election, during which a crowd of 400,000 gathered for his campaign opening on the beach of the Hangang River. On May 5, he died from a heart attack inside of a train while going to Jeonju for a campaign event. He was given a state funeral, and in 1962, he was posthumously awarded the Republic of Korea Medal, the highest among the Orders of Merit for National Foundation, in recognition of his outstanding meritorious services to the country.

The base of the round burial mound is surrounded by stone slabs, and in front of the burial mound are various stone structures, including a table, an incense table, two statues of civil officials, a lantern, and two pillars.
