국문

이승만 대통령은 평소 남한산성에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 그 이유로 남한산성은 1954년 대한민국 최초의 국립공원으로 지정되었다. 대통령 이승만 박사 송수탑은 1955년 6월 15일 이승만 대통령의 팔순을 기념하여 설치되었으며, 높이 8m의 팔각 기둥에 날개를 펼친 봉황이 탑 위에 있었다. 이 탑은 1960년 사일구혁명 이후 철거되었고, 남한산성의 국립공원 지정도 취소되었다. 현재는 탑의 기초부만 남아 있다.

The Site of a Monument for Former President Syngman Rhee

This site is where the Monument to Celebrate Longevity was erected in June 1955 to commemorate the 80th birthday of Syngman Rhee (1875-1965), the first president of the Republic of Korea. The monument is said to have been an octagonal pillar measuring 8 meters in height that was crowned with a sculpture of a phoenix spreading its wings. However, shortly after the April 19 Revolution in 1960, which denounced Rhee’s administration, Rhee stepped down from the presidency and went into exile in Hawai’i. Consequently, the monument was demolished, and only its foundation remains today.

영문 해설 내용

이곳은 대한민국 초대 대통령인 이승만(1875-1965)의 팔순을 기념하여, 1955년 6월 “장수를 송축하는 탑”을 세웠던 곳이다. 이 탑은 8m 높이의 팔각 기둥 위에 날개를 펼친 봉황이 있는 모습이었다고 한다. 그러나 1960년 이승만 정권을 규탄하는 4.19혁명이 일어난 직후 이승만은 대통령직에서 물러나 하와이로 망명하였고, 탑 역시 그 여파로 철거되었다. 현재 이곳에는 탑의 기초부만 남아 있다.
