장대란 군사 지휘와 적의 관측을 쉽게 하기 위하여 설치한 시설로 남한산성에는 5개의 장대가 있었다.

남장대는 남한산성의 남쪽에 있어 남장대로 불리며, 수어청(守禦廳)의 전영장(前營將)이 이곳에 주둔하였다. 조선 정조 12년(1788) 이태영이 2층으로 고치고 타운루(唾雲樓)라는 편액을 걸었다고 전해지나 지금은 주춧돌만 남아 있다.

2015~2016년 발굴 조사 결과로 가로와 세로가 각각 11m인 정방형의 평면 건물지가 확인되었다.

Southern Command Post Site (Namhansanseong Fortress)

A command post (jangdae) was the center from which a military commander would direct soldiers during military drills and war.

The Southern Command Post was one of the five command posts in Namhansanseong Fortress, only one of which remains today (Sueojangdae Command Post). It was under the command of the front battalion lieutenant of the Office of the Defense Commander, a military headquarters stationed within the fortress. This command post is said to have been rebuilt in 1788 as a two-story wooden building, but all that remains today are its pillar-base stones. An excavation conducted in 2015-2016 confirmed a square building site measuring 11 m in diameter.

영문 해설 내용

장대는 군사훈련 또는 전쟁 시에 대장이 군사들을 지휘하는 건물이다.

남장대는 남한산성에 있던 5개의 장대 중 하나이며, 지금은 수어장대만 남아 있다. 산성 내에 주둔하던 수어청의 전영장이 담당하였다. 1788년 중층 건물로 다시 지었다고 전해지나 지금은 주춧돌만 남아 있다. 2015~2016년 발굴조사 결과로 가로와 세로가 각각 11m인 정방형의 평면 건물지가 확인되었다.
