Ancient Life: The Archeological Site in Sinchang-dong
Narrative
The Archaeological Site in Sinchang-dong provides important evidence of ancient farming and lifestyle from the Iron Age. Structural remains at the site include swamp sites, ponds, earthenware kilns, drainage paths, pit dwelling sites, and jar coffin tombs. The discovery of 53 jar coffin tombs of children is most notable. Excavated from the coffins were earthenware and ironware, while earthenware, woodwork, stoneware were excavated from the marsh and pond sites. Notably, wooden artifacts like bows, hoes, combs, and barrel covers were discovered from the first time in Korea, preserved by the swamp. Burnt rice, rice seed, and apricot stones were also discovered, attesting to the agriculture along the Yeongsangang River at the time. The many excavated artifacts are kept at the Gwangju National Museum.
