Celtic's Champions League dreams were all but dashed as Diego Simeone's side dominated Celtic. Real led after an Antoine Griezmann deflected shot slipped past Joe Hart into the bottom corner.

Rodgers' hopes of an upset were dashed after Daizen Maeda saw his yellow card upgraded to red by VAR after 23 minutes, and Alvaro Morata scored off Jose Maria Gimenez's header to complete Rodgers' misery.

Daizen Maeda’s red card

Maeda's red card proved pivotal to Celtic's dismal evening against Fulham. The Japan international left his foot dangling during a 50-50 challenge with Mario Hermoso who then lay injured on the pitch, prompting referee Ivan Kruzliak to consult VAR before issuing a straight red.

Shortly after halftime, Atletico doubled their advantage through Antoine Griezmann's strike that Hart could only parry. Additionally, substitute Samuel Lino curled an exquisite shot past Hart before Morata scored another.

Rodrigo de Paul was sent off for his sliding tackle in the 83rd minute; even with 10 players on the pitch it was enough for Celtic to limit any further damage. Alvaro Morata’s first

Atletico Madrid cemented their lead in Group E of UEFA Champions League by defeating Celtic 6-0 and moving ahead of Bayern Munich for top position.

Griezmann and Morata each scored twice to hand Scottish champions an embarrassing defeat at Estadio Metropolitano. Daizen Maeda's yellow card was upgraded to red following review; Samuel Lino and Saul Niguez also contributed significantly.

Kyogo Furuhashi had put the hosts ahead within four minutes but Atletico quickly responded with two goals from Morata from outside of the box.

Samuel Lino’s second

Griezmann scored just six minutes into the match after Celtic afforded him an opportunity to shoot. Joe Hart misfired under no pressure, giving Griezmann enough space for a low shot that deflected off Cameron Carter-Vickers and found its mark.

After that, things quickly escalated for the Hoops. Jan Oblak made several outstanding saves to maintain their lead, though their defence was exposed once more at around 60 minutes.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Luis Palma attempted to force saves before Morata doubled the lead with his diagonal ball finding Lino who scored again like at Parkhead last season. Morata then played an integral part in Lino scoring again when Lino scored off of it to make it 3-1 for Chelsea FC.

Antoine Griezmann’s third

Brendan Rodgers declared Atletico Madrid one of Europe's premier teams on the eve of this Champions League clash and they certainly delivered.

After only six minutes, Spain took the lead when Callum McGregor deflected a cross into Celtic's box and found Griezmann. His shot took a deflection off Cameron Carter-Vickers and nestled into the bottom corner for an early lead for Spain.

Atletico were soon four up despite several impressive saves from former England No1 Joe Hart, with Morata capitalising on a loose ball after an acrobatic volley from Griezmann and adding his second goal soon afterwards. Substitute Samuel Lino added another through his curling strike before Saul Niguez completed scoring late on.

Saul Niguez’s fourth

Atletico Madrid had no trouble dispossessing 10-man Celtic with ease as Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata both scored twice apiece to hand them an emphatic Champions League defeat. Saul Niguez played his part as well, constantly posing threats on the midfielder side.

Maeda came close to earning a penalty when she tangled with fullback Hermoso, but VAR review saw his appeals for the spot kick dismissed.

Although he is an integral member of Atletico Madrid's squad, Niguez may leave in January with Manchester United reported interested in making a late move for him. Niguez was taken off after an ineffective 45 minutes; substitute Samuel Lino then produced an unstoppable shot which beat Hart. Alvaro Morata’s fifth

Atletico were determined and eventually scored their fourth when their opponents seemed overwhelmed. Griezmann's deflected shot from outside the box deceived Joe Hart before finding its way into the bottom corner for their fourth goal of the day.

Substitute Samuel Lino responded almost instantly after coming on for Correa by curling a fine fifth goal from long range, before Morata made it 6-0 with another shot that Hart couldn't reach in the 76th minute.

Before kick-off, Brendan Rodgers declared Atletico Madrid one of Europe's finest teams and they did not disappoint. Now the Hoops must hope that Lazio and Feyenoord can provide some consolation in their last two games as they remain bottom of Group E with just one point.
