初七日,漂大洋中,是日陰,風勢甚惡,波浪淘湧,海色白,義縣監蔡允惠嘗謂臣曰:“濟州父老云:天晴日登漢拏山絕頂,則遙望西南絕域海外,若有白沙汀一帶者”以今觀之,非白沙,乃望此白海而云也,臣謂權山等日:“在高麗時,爾濟州朝大元,自明月浦,遇便風得直路,七書夜之間,過白海,渡大洋,今我漂海,直路散路,不可知也,幸得入白海之中,則竊疑中國之界必近矣,若得泊中國,則中國是我父母之邦也,當此時,生我死我,皆天所為,而風之順逆,天實主張,今東風不變,已經累日,則抑竊疑天必有生我之 心也. 爾等其各勉人所當為之事,以聽天所命耳,”至暮,風又變東北,權山猶指舵向西,夜未央,暴濤激躍,又駕入天篷,被人頭面,人皆皈目不能開,領船、精工皆痛哭,莫知所為,臣亦知不免於死,裂單灸纏身數圍,轉之于舟中橫木,盖欲死後屍與丹久不相離也,莫金、巨伊皆哭泣聯抱臣,曰:“死且同歸,”安義大哭,曰:“吾與其鹹水而死,莫如自絕,”以弓結自織,金粟救之得不死,臣叫領船、精工等曰:“舟已破乎?”曰:“否”曰:“舵

지금 동풍이 변치 않은 채 이미 여러 날이 지나고 있으니, 아마 하늘이 우리를 꼭 살리실 마음이 있는 듯하다.

너희는 각자가 마땅히 해야 할 일을 힘쓴 다음에 하늘의 명을 기다려야 한다” 라고 하였습니다.

해가 저무니 바람은 또 동풍이 변하여 북풍이 부는데, 권산은 그래도 키를 서쪽을 가리켜 향하였습니다.

아직 한밤중이 되지 않았을 때 사나운 물결이 부딪쳐 솟구치고 또 봉옥(蓬屋)으로 밀려들어 사람의 얼굴을 덮쳐버리니 모두 눈을 뜰 수가 없었습니다.

영선(領船)과 사공이 모두 통곡하면서 어찌 할 바를 몰랐습니다.

신 또한 죽음을 면치 못할 줄 알고 홑이불을 찢어서 몸에 여러 겹을 감아 배 가운데의 빗장나무에 묶어 매니, 이는 죽은 후 시신과 배가 오래도록 서로 떨어지지 않도록 함이었습니다.

막금과 거이산도 모두 큰 소리를 내어 울면서 신의 몸을 나란히 감싸고 말하기를,

“죽더라도 함께 죽겠습니다”라고 하고,

안의는 큰 소리로 울면서, “나는 짠 바닷물을 마시고 죽기보다는 스스로 목숨을 끊는 편이 낫겠습니다”라고 하며, 활시위로 자기 의 목을 매어 죽으려고 하였으나 김속이 구해주어 죽지 않게 되었습니다.

신은 영선과 사공 등을 큰 소리로 불러 말하기를, “배가 부서졌는가?”라고 하였습니다.

“아닙니다.”

“키를 잃었는가?”

“아닙니다.”

곧 거이산을 돌아보고 말하기를,

“비록 파도가 험악하고 사세가 급박하지만, 배는 실로 튼튼하여 쉽사리 부서지지는 않겠다. 만약 물을 퍼내어 버릴 수만 있다면 살아날 수 있을 것이다. 너는 실로 몸이 건장하니 네가 다시 가서 물을 퍼내도록 하라”라고 하였습니다. 거이산은 곧 명령에 따라 물을 퍼내려고 하였으나, 물푸는 그릇이 이미 모두 부서졌으므로 큰 소리로 울부짖어도 소용이 없었습니다. 안의가 즉시 칼로 작은북의 한 면을 찢어 버리고는 이를 그릇으로 삼아 거이산에게 주었습니다. 거이산은 이효지, 권송, 도종, 현산 등과 함께 힘을 다하여 물을 퍼내었지만 그래도 무릎 깊이의 물이 남았습니다. 효자,정보, 이정, 김중 등이 몸소 물을 퍼내기도 하고, 군인 구질회 등 7-8명을 서서 독려하며 서로 잇달아 물을 다 퍼내어 내니 겨우 침몰하지 않게 되었습니다.

7th Day. Adrift in the Open Ocean. This day was cloudy. The wind was very bad, and the waves were heavy. The sea was white. Ch'ae Ku-he, the Junior Director of Sõnúi District, had said to me, “The old men of Cheju say that if you climb to the top of Mt. Halla on a clear day and look southwest to the farthest reach of the sea, there seems to be a strip of white sand.” Now that I saw this, it was not white sand but this white sea that they saw and spoke of.12 . I said to Kwon San and others, “In the Koryo period Cho Tae-won of your Cheju caught favorable winds from Myongwöl-p'o, kept a direct course, and crossed the ocean through the White Sea in seven days and nights. Now we cannot tell whether our drifting through the sea has been on a direct or erratic course. Since we have been fortunate enough to enter the White Sea, I suspect that the coast of China must be near. If we manage to land in China, well, China is our homeland. Right now, whether we live or die is up to Heaven. Whether the wind is favorable or otherwise is also at the disposition of Heaven. The east wind has not changed now for several days, so I suspect Heaven intends to let us live. Let each of you be diligent in the things that are within the power of men and accept the fate [decided] by Heaven.” With evening, the wind again shifted from east to north. Kwon San still held the tiller bearing west. The night was not yet far advanced when violent waves rose wildly. They again broke over the mat awning, striking the men's heads and faces. All the men closed their eyes and could not open them. The captain and helmsman wept bitterly and did not know what to do. I, too, knew that we could not escape death. I ripped a sheet into strips, bound my body several times round, and fastened myself to a cross-beam of the boat, for I wished that after I died my corpse and the boat should not be separated for a long time. Makkům and Kõisan wept. They both embraced me and said, “We shall even go to death together.” An Üi wept loudly and said, “Rather than die from swallowing salt water I will kill myself.” He tried to strangle himself with a bow string, but Kim Sok saved him from dying. I called out to the captain and helmsman, “Is the boat stove??' They said, “No.” I said, “Is the tiller lost?” They said, “No." Then I turned to Kõisan and said, “The waves are dangerous and matters grave, but actually the boat is sound. It will not easily be lost. If we can keep on bailing to the very end, we may save our lives. You are strong, you go start the bailing.” On receiving my command, Kõisan wanted bailing to be done, but the bailing buckets were completely smashed. There was no means to carry out the order. An Ui split off small drum heads with a knife to make buckets and gave them to Kõisan. Kõisan, Yi Hyo-ji, Kwon Song, To-jong, and Hyon San bailed water with all their might. It seemed to be knee-deep. Hyo-ja, Chòng Po, Yi Chong and Kim Chung either scooped up water themselves or oversaw seven or eight soldiers, including Kujilhoe. Going one after another, they scooped it all out. We had barely managed not to be sunk.
