過天津衛。是日陰。曉過直沽城。河名。卽沽水也。至天津，衛城。衛河自南而北。卽臣所沿來之下水也。白河自北而南。卽臣所遡去之上水也。二河合流于城之東以入海。城臨兩河之會。海在城之東十餘里。卽舊時江淮以南漕運。皆浮大海。復會于此。以達京師。今則疏鑿水道置閘。閑縱舟楫之利。通于天下。城中有衛司及左衛，右衛之司。分治海運等事。城東有巨廟臨河岸。大書其額。臣遠而望之。其上天字。其下廟字。其中一字。不知某字也。遡河過丁字沽，海口里，河東巡更所，桃花口，尹兒灣，蒲溝兒，下老米店。至楊村驛。驛西又有巡檢司。
천진위(天津衛)를 지났습니다.
이 날은 흐렸습니다.
새벽에 직고성(直古城)을 지났는데 강의 이름은 고수(活水)였습니다.
천진위성(天津衛城)에 이르렀는데 위하(衛河)는 남에서 북으로 흐르니 곧 신이 흐름을 따라온 강의 순류였으며, 백하(白河)는 북에서 남으로 흐르니 곧 신이 거슬러 가야 할 강의 역류였습니다.
두 강이 성의 동쪽에서 합류하여 바다로 들어갔습니다.
성은 두 강이 만나는 곳에 임해 있었습니다.
바다는 성의 동쪽 10여 리에 있었으니 곧 옛날 강회(江淮) 이남의 조운이 모두 큰 바다로 나갔다가 다시 이곳에 모인 뒤 경사로 가곤 하였습니다.
지금은 수로를 뚫어 열고 갑문을 설치하여 열고 닫으니 선박의 편리함이 천하에 통하게 되었습니다.
성안에 위사(衛司)와 좌위사(左衛司)·우위사(右衛司)의 관사(官司)가 있어 해운 등의 일을 나누어 관장하였습니다.
성 동쪽에는 큰 사당이 강 언덕에 접해 있어 그 편액을 큰 글자로 썼는데, 신이 먼 데서 바라보니 그 위는 '천(天)'자, 그 아래는 '묘(廟)'자였지만 중간의 한 글자는 무슨 글자인지 알 수 없었습니다.
강을 거슬러 올라가서 정자고(丁字法)·해구리(海口里)·하동순경소(河東巡更所)·도화구(桃花口)·윤아만(尹兒灣)·포구아(蒲름兒). 하로미점(下老米店)을 지나서 양촌역(楊村驛)에 이르니 양촌역 서쪽에는 또 순검사가 있었습니다.
24th Day. Passing T’ien-chin [Tientsin] Garrison. This day was cloudy.
At dawn we passed Chih-ku. The name of the river by the wall was Ku River. We came to the wall of T’ien-chin Garrison. The Wei River ran from south to north and was the river down which I had come, the Pei River ran from north to south and was the river up which I was to go, and the two rivers joined east of the wall to flow into the sea. The wall overlooked the junction of the rivers, and the sea was over ten li east of the wall. In olden times, all cargoes from the Yangtze, Huai, and places south of them sailed the open sea and reassembled there to reach the capital. Now, the benefits of canals cut, locks placed, and boats given passage reach throughout the Empire.
Inside the wall were garrison posts. The posts of the Left and Right Garrisons divided the administration of sea transport and other matters. East of the wall was a huge shrine overlooking the river bank, the inscription on its plaque so big that though I was far from it, I saw it. At the top was the word “Heaven” [t'ien] and at the bottom the word "Shrine” [miao]. There was a word in between them, but I do not know what it was.
