개요

임순득인물은 한국 최초의 여성 비평가이다.


생애

'한국 최초 여성 비평가'의 탄생

'한국 최초 여성 비평가' 라고 불리는 임순득은 아버지 '임명호(任命鎬, 1878-1950)'와 어머니 '미상 (전주 이씨(1877-?))' 사이의 2남 3녀 중 막내로 태어났다. 임순득의 출생은 전북 고창군으로 알려져 있지만, 종합문예지 <문예연구> 2022년 가을호-기획특집에서 최명표 문학평론가는 임순득의 출생지가 전주임을 바로잡았다. 아버지인 임명호는 양반으로서 1934년 시점에서 재산이 5,000원 정도이며 빚이 없다 했으니, 경제적으로 상당히 여유있는 집안이었음을 알 수 있다. 임순득은 고향에서 보통학교를 마친 뒤 서울로 와서 1929년 4월 이화여자고등보통학교에 입학했다. 임순득과 나이 차이가 많이 나는 언니들은 어떤 학습을 받았는지 알 수 없지만 큰 오빠는 서울에서 대학을 다니고 있었고, 작은오빠 임택재는 고창고보를 졸업한 뒤 일본으로 유학을 간 상태이다. 이에 임순득도 고향을 떠나 서울로 진학했다.


두 번의 퇴학

임순득이 이화여고보 1학년 때인 1929년 11월 3일 광주학생운동이 일어났고 그 여파로 1930년 1월에는 이화여고보의 주도로 서울여학생만세운동이 벌어졌다. 이후 1930년대 전반기는 학생들의 동맹휴학 투쟁이 매우 활발했고 또 그런 운동과정에서 학교를 나온 많은 학생들이 노동운동이나 농촌운동으로 뛰어들었다. 임순득은 아직 1학년이어서 서울여학생만세운동 과정에서 뚜렷한 모습을 보이지는 않지만 그 이후의 동맹휴학 투쟁에는 주모자로 나서서 이화여고보에서 퇴학을 당하고, 또 동덕여고보에 편입해서도 마찬가지로 동맹휴학을 주도하는 등으로 일본 제국주의에 반대하는 운동에 적극적으로 참가한다.


임순득, 작가가 되다

임순득은 1933년 여름 동덕여고보를 퇴학당한 뒤, 1937년 2월 '일요일'이라는 단편소설을 발표하여 작가로 등단하고 자기 시대의 '여류작가 논의'를 비판하면서 '여류작가'도 여성 이전에 작가임을 강조하는 논쟁적인 글을 발표한 것을 포함해 연이어 세 편의 평론을 발표하였다. 어떤 경로를 통해 작가와 평론가로서의 길을 걷기로 했는지에 관해서 분명하게 밝혀진 것은 없다.





연구

단편소설 '일요일'

임순득의 첫 소설인 '일요일'은 외부를 비판하면서 자신을 성찰하는 만만치 않은 지성과 섬세한 심리묘사를 갖춘 소설이다. 1935년 카프가 해산하고 일제의 탄압이 심해지면서 운동선상에서 떨어져 나온 사람들의 추억과 회환을 담은 '후일담 소설'이 많이 나왔다. 그 후일담들은 '생활의 발견'이라는 쪽으로 쉽게 과거를 부정하는 면모를 보인다. 그러나 임순득의 소설에서 과거는 여전히 현재와 직결되어있고 현재의 삶을 규정하는 지표가 되어있다. 소설 '일요일'에서 바깥에 있는 혜영에게 감옥에 있는 윤호는 '생활의 표식'이며, 혜영이는 '입을 달싹달싹' 하면서 무엇을 기다리고 거기에 호응하여 무언가를 말하고 싶어하는 간절한 욕망을 가지고 있다. 자기의 무력함을 알지만 좌절로는 가지 않는 정신 세계가 임순득의 소설에는 있다. 임순득에게 1930년대 전반 대중운동이 활발하게 전개되었던 과거는 1930년대 후반에는 지하 운동으로 여전히 지속되고 있었기 때문이다.


오빠의 죽음

1937년 2월 단편소설 '일요일'로 등단한 뒤 임순득은 1년동안 3편의 평론을 발표했다. 그러고 나서 1년간은 쉬었다가 다시 1939년 4월부터 짧은 수필을 몇 편 썼다. 또 1940년 10월부터 5개월간 일본어로 쓴 소설 3편을 발표했다. 그러고는 침묵으로 있다가 해방을 맞이했다. 두 번의 공백기를 살펴보면 첫 번째 공백기에는 오빠 임택재의 죽음이 놓여 있고, 두 번째 공백기에는 한글 신문 잡지의 폐간이 놓여있다. 오빠 임택재의 사망 이후 임순득이 쓴 소설 '우정'에는 주인공의 오빠가 일제시대에 '예방구금소'에서 죽었고 여성 인물 자신은 그 충격으로 첫 아이를 유산했다고 하는 서술이 있다. '예방구금소'란 일제가 1941년 3월 '조선사상범 예방구금령'을 공포하여 실정법을 위반할 우려가 있는 사람을 언제든지 잡아서 가둬놓도록 한 곳으로 비전향자들에게는 공포의 대상이었다. 임택재는 '조선사상범 예방구금령' 공포 이전에 죽었으니 소설 '우정'의 서술은 허구화 된 것으로 봐야겠지만, 1936년 이미 '조선사상범보호관찰령'이 제정되어 임택재는 보호관찰의 대상이 되어있었다. 결국 그의 죽음은 일제 경찰로 받은 고문과 감옥살이의 후유증이었을 것이다.


해방과 여성문학

북한의 여성 정책은 여성이 전래의 가부장제적 억압으로부터 해방되는 길로 평등한 사회적 활동에의 참여를 보장하는 측면과 국가 생산력을 높이기 위해 모성을 효과적으로 동원한다는 양 측면이 혼재되어있다. 시기에 따라 정책의 강조점이 달라지기는 하지만 참여와 동원, 혹은 그 결과로서의 해방과 억압이라는 이중성을 가지고 있는 것이다. 그런데 국가의 통제가 강한 북한 사회의 경우, 공식적 언어 이면에서 비공식적으로 발화되는 삶의 현실은 다성적 발화가 가능한 소설 장르를 통해서 가장 잘 드러날 수 있다. 임순득이 해방 후에 쓴 소설은 공식적으로 평등해진 여성의 지위와 비공식적인 개인의 삶에서 여전히 유지되고 있는 남성 중심의 관습이 서로 부딪히는 자리를 예민하게 포착함으로써 여성문학의 면모를 보인다.
