Commercial Building of Haean-ro Crossing in Mokpo

This Commercial Building of Haean-ro Crossing in Mokpo was originally a store located at the intersection in front of the Mokpo Police building during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea. The road in front of the former Japanese Consulate building led from here to Mokpo Station or Gapjaok Hat Store. The building register listed the building as having been constructed in 1935, but it is presumed to have been built earlier. The first owner of this building was Japanese merchant Matsumura Shosuke, who served as an executive at Mokpo Electric Co., Ltd., Joseon Refractories Co., Ltd., and the Mokpo Financial Association, and was also the publisher of the magazine Kkaldagu Haiku. The building was a representative stationery store of the Japanese colonial rule.
The building was built in polygonal form to fit the form of the road, and an arched window was added to the corners of the building as an ornamental embellishment. It is a Japanese-style mixed-use building known as a machiya (townhouse), whose first floor was occupied by various stores while the second floor served as a residential space. The second-floor residence consists of several small rooms opening on to narrow corridors. The outer shape of the building and the unique interior structure have been well preserved in their original form.

목포 해안로 교차로 상가 주택

목포 해안로 교차로 상가 주택은 일제 강점기 목포 경찰서 앞 교차로에 있던 상점이다. 구 일본 영사관 건물의 앞쪽 도로가 이곳을 기준으로 목포역 혹은 갑자옥 모자점 방향으로 갈라진다. 건축대장에 1935년 준공으로 등록되어 있으나 그 이전부터 지어진 것으로 추정된다. 이 건물의 최초 소유자는 목포 전등 주식회사, 조선 내화 공업 주식회사, 목포 금융 조합 등의 임원으로 활동하고, 『깔다구』라는 이름의 하이쿠(俳句)* 전문 잡지를 발행하기도 한 일본 상인 마쓰무라 쇼스케(松村正助)이다. 이 건물은 일제 강점기 목포의 대표적인 문구점 건물이다.
건물은 도로의 상황에 맞게 다각형 형태로 지어졌고, 모서리 전면에 아치형 창문을 설치하여 멋스러움을 더했다. 1층은 상가, 2층은 주택으로 활용하는 일본식 점포 주택 마치아(町家) 형식의 건물이다. 2층 주택부에는 좁은 복도를 따라 작은 방이 여러 개 설치되어 있다. 건물 외형과 독특한 내부 구조 등이 원형대로 잘 보존되어 있다.

근대기 목포의 대표적 번화가이자 중심지였던 구 목포경찰서 앞 교차로에 면해 건축된 가장 상징적 상가 건물로 교차로에 면한 부정형의 다각형 대지에서 대지 형태에 맞춰 부정형의 다각형 평면과 독특한 외관을 구성하였으며, 특히 교차로 모서리에 면한 수직적 벽체를 아치형 창문과 옥탑 장식을 강조한 일본 마찌야(町家) 형식으로 2층 규모의 목조상가주택이다. 주거 기능을 형성한 상업거리의 흔적, 역사성, 장소성을 보여주는 보존상태가 양호한 상가건물이다.
