'''Statue of Hwang Hyeon'''

 +
This statue was erected in 2004 and depicts Hwang Hyeon (1855-1910, pen name: Maecheon*), a scholar of the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

 +
Hwang was born in Bonggang-myeon Township of Gwangyang and passed the classics licentiate examination in 1888 but disappointed with rampant corruption (in the political circles?), he chose not to seek a career of a civil official and devoted his whole life to academic pursuits.

 +
Hwang wrote a number of books which include ''A Chonicle Written Under a Paulownia Tree'' (Ohagimun) which provides a detailed account of the the Donghak Peasant Revolution (1894-1895) and ''Unofficial Chronicles of Hwang Hyeon''** (Maecheon Yarok) which chronologically describes the historical events in Korea between the years 1864 and 1910. After the illegal protectorate treaty was made between Korea and Japan in 1905, Hwang attempted to leave for China to seek political asylum but did not succeed. Having realized the importance of the implementation of the scientific and cultural achievements of the West for the country’s progress, in 1907, Hwang initiated (and oversaw?) the construction of Hoyang School in today’s Gurye area. In 1910 when Korea completely lost its sovereignty to Japan, Hwang wrote down his will along with a death poem and took his own life.
