In the 1920s during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), Yi Jong-cheol (1879-1938) from Geumpung-ri who was attending Whimoon High School in Seoul, visited the Dangun shrine Samseongsa Shrine in Guwolsan Mountain, Hwanghae-do Province, and saw that the shrine had been destroyed by the brutality of the colonial authorities. Yi Jong-cheol enshrined Dangun's portrait in his hometown, built a worship hall in 1922, and began rituals. After Korea’s liberation from the Japanese colonial rule in 1945, he kept doing memorial rituals, so the citizens of Haenam formed an association for the establishment of Dangunjeon Shrine which was moved to its current location in 1957. In 2006, Dangunjeon Shrine was designated as a Haenam-gun County Local Cultural Heritage.
