Based on this 연혁 (https://nifos.forest.go.kr/kfsweb/kfi/kfs/cms/cmsView.do?cmsId=FC_001670&mn=UKFR_04_03), 임업시험장 refered to one of the four offices (중부임업시험장, 서부임업시험장, 남부임업시험장, 제주 임업시험장), but also to a single organization administering all of them. So when it says that the name was changed to 임업연구원 in 1987 and then to국립산림과학원 in 2004, they mean the main headquarters, not the regional stations. This station, however, was not even one of the four regional stations but sth like Hamyang-Hadong local office of 남부임업시험장, I suppose. And according to 영문해설내용 this particular building never even carried the name 임업시험장. I’m very confused.

해설문

국문

임업시험장은 산림청 소속의 기관 중 하나로 산림 자원의 개발과 임업의 발달 및 개량을 목적으로 설립된 기관이다. 1987년에 임업연구원으로 명칭이 변경되었다가 2004년에 국립산림과학원으로 다시 변경되었다.

옛 임업시험장 하동․함양지장은 일제 강점기인 1917년에 교토대학 부속 연습림을 관리하는 사무실로 세워졌으며, 지상 1층인 개량된 일본식 목조 양식에 서양의 건축 양식이 부분적으로 가미된 건물이다. 정면 5칸, 뒷면 6칸, 측면 4칸으로 이루어졌으며 0.6m 정도 높이의 기단 위에 직선적인 일본식 처마 선이 적용되었다. 지붕은 옆면에서 볼 때 여덟 팔(八)자 모양인 팔작지붕이다.

8·15 광복 후 1993년까지 남부영림서 함양관리소 사무소로 사용되다가 지금은 산림 보호와 관리에 이용되는 물품을 보관하고 나무 제품을 소개하는 산림정보관으로 사용되고 있다.
