이 곳은 겨레의 큰 스승인 퇴계 이황(李滉 1501∼1570) 선생의 영혼이 잠들어 있는 묘소로서 태백산의 한 줄기가 내려와 마지막 끝나는 건지산 자락이다.

묘소에 올라보면 높은 관직과 선생이라는 존칭을 버리고 퇴도만은진성이공지묘(退陶晩隱眞城李公之墓)라고 쓰여 진 작은 빗돌에서 퇴계선생의 고매한 인품과 겸양의 정신을 느낄 수 있다.

묘비에는 선생이 일생을 회고한 자명(自銘)과 고봉 기대승(奇大升 1527∼1572)이 지은 묘비문이 새겨져 있고 묘소는 화려하지 않고 소박한 모습을 하고 있다.

1570년 12월 선생의 부음(訃音)을 듣고 선조임금은 곧바로 영의정에 추증하고 3일 동안 조회(朝會)를 멈추고 철시(撤市)와 죄수의 처형, 도살, 음악을 금하였다.

1571년 3월 묘소에 장사 지낼 때 유족은, 선생의 유계(遺戒)에 따라 예장과 묘소에 석물 장식을 사양하였으나 나라에서 최소한의 격식으로 만든 석인, 석상, 혼유석이 너무 크고 사치스러워 눈물을 뿌리며 “이럴 줄 알았으면 유계(遺戒)가 없는 것만 못하다”고 탄식 하였다.

퇴계선생 묘소 아래에는 며느리 봉화 금씨의 묘소가 있다. “내가 시아버님 아낌을 많이 받았는데 여러 가지로 부족한 점이 많았다. 그래서 죽어서라도 다시 아버님을 정성껏 모시고 싶으니 내가 죽거든 반드시 아버님 묘소 가까운 곳에 묻어 주면 좋겠다.”라고 유언하여 생전 퇴계선생의 어질고 자애로운 마음을 짐작할 수 있다.

영문

This is the tomb of Yi Hwang (1501-1570, pen name: Toegye), one of the most prominent Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Yi was born in Andong. In 1534, he passed the state examination. Thereafter, Yi served in public office until his late forties, when he retired to his hometown to pursue his preferred life of self-cultivation and teaching. During this time, he wrote and taught prolifically, leading him to become a renowned Confucian scholar. In the last few years of his life, he was briefly called to public office but retired for the last time in 1569 and passed away the following year. He was posthumously promoted to chief state councilor, the highest official rank.

Yi had conveyed in his will that he did not want any stone furnishings for his tomb. However, when his tomb was built in 1571, the royal court bestowed the minimum number of stone furnishings as was required by formality.

The simple tombstone is inscribed with epitaphs composed by Yi, himself, and Gi Dae-seung (1527-1572), another renowned Confucian scholar of the Joseon period.

The tomb of Yi’s daughter-in-law, Lady Geum, is located on the same hill as Yi’s tomb. She left a will saying she wanted to be buried near her father-in-law, so she could repay his care and love even after death.
