이 집은 독립운동가인 신영호(1902~1947) 선생의 생가로, 충청도 양반가의 전형이라고 할 집이다.

조선말 1881년(고종 18)에 지은 것이다.

정면 5칸, 측면 4칸의 ㄱ자 팔작 지붕집의 안채이다.

본래 사랑채와 곳간채, 마고 등 부속건물이 있었으나, 한말에 신정식이 살았을 때에 의병의 숙식을 제공했다는 이유로 일본군에 의해 소실되고 안채만이 남아 있다.

이집은 일제시대 민족 교육의 목적으로 창설된 대활단의 본거지 이기도 하였다.

독립운동가 신형호(1902~1947)의 생가로, 1881년(고종18)에 건축되었다. 본래는 안채와 사랑채, 곡간채 등이 있었으나, 신형호의 부친 신정식(申正植)이 의병에게 숙식을 제공하였다는 이유로 일본군에 의해 훼손되고 현재는 안채만 남아있다. 안채는 앞면 5칸 측면 4칸의 ㄱ자형 건물로, 충청도 양반가의 전형이라 할 만한 건축물이다. 2칸의 대청을 중심으로 오른쪽에는 부엌과 마루가 딸린 안방과 웃방이 있으며, 왼쪽에는 부엌과 마루가 딸린 건너방이 있다.

신형호*는 많은 독립운동가를 배출한 고령신씨(高靈申氏) 가문의 일원으로, 1919년 3･1운동 당시 경성중앙학교 재학생으로 서울에 있다가 독립선언서를 가지고 청주로 귀향하였다. 이후 청주농업학교 기숙사에서 학생들과 만세운동을 준비하던 중 체포되어 11월간의 옥고를 치룬 인물로, 이 공적을 인정받아 1990년 애족장에 서훈되었다.

This hanok is the birthplace of Sin Yeong-ho, (1902-1947), an independence activist. Built in 1881, this house shows the typical architectural style of aristocratic residences in the Chungcheong-do area.

Originally, there was a men’s quarters, as well as auxiliary structures such as a storehouse and a stable.

However, because Sin’s father provided accommodation for the Korean civilian army, these buildings were destroyed by Japanese soldiers.

Now, only the women’s quarters remains.

This house was built in 1881 as the birthplace of independence activist Sin Hyeong-ho (Sin Yeong-ho, 1902-1947).

Sin Hyeong-ho was a member of the Goryeong Sin Clan family of the Cheongju area which has produced a large number of Korean independence movement leaders. The March First Independence Movement took place in 1919 during his Confucian education* in Seoul and he brought the Declaration of Independence upon returning to Cheongju. He was arrested during preparations of a demonstration for independence against colonial rule with Cheongju students and was imprisoned. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation by the Korean government.

Originally, this house had several more buildings such as a men's living quarters and a storehouse, but they were damaged by the Japanese military for Sin Hyeong-ho’s father, Sin Jeong-sik (1868-?), was providing meals and accommodation to the civilian armies, so currently only the women's quarters remains. The L-shaped women's quarters has a wooden-floored hall in the center and a main room on the right side, with a kitchen in front of the main room. An underfloor-heated furnace is installed underneath on the right side of the wooden-floored hall with an attic atop of that and a room with a narrow wooden veranda side by side of that.

이 집은 독립운동가 신형호(신영호, 1902-1947)의 생가로 1881년에 지어졌다.

신형호는 독립운동가를 많이 배출한 청주 지역 고령신씨 가문의 일원이다. 서울에서 유학 중이던 1919년 3.1운동이 일어나자 독립선언서를 가지고 청주로 돌아왔다. 청주 학생들과 만세운동을 준비하던 중 체포되어 옥고를 치뤘다. 1990년 대한민국 정부가 건국훈장 애족장을 추서하였다.

이 집은 원래 사랑채, 곳간채 등 여러 채의 건물이 더 있었으나, 신형호의 아버지인 신정식(1868-?)이 의병들에게 숙식을 제공했다는 이유로 일본군에 의해 훼손되고 지금은 안채만 남아 있다. ‘ㄱ’자형의 안채는 대청을 중심으로 오른쪽에는 안방이 있고, 안방 앞에 부엌이 있다. 대청 왼쪽에는 아래에 온돌 아궁이를 설치하고 그 위에 다락을 두었고, 그 옆으로는 툇마루가 딸린 방이 있다.
