해설문
국문
창녕 목마산성은 목마산을 감싸고 있는 포곡식 산성*이다. 목마산성은 둘레가 1,980m에 이른다. 북쪽과 동쪽 성벽의 일부 구간은 본래 모습이 남아 있으며 계곡에 가까운 남쪽 벽에서 남문 터가 확인되었다. 성벽은 신라의 일반적인 성벽 쌓기 기술인 ‘바른층 쌓기**’ 방식이 적용되었다.
목마산성은 6세기 중반 신라시대에 쌓은 것으로 추정된다. 신라 진흥왕(540~576년 재위)이 555년에 창녕에 하주(下州)를 설치하고, 561년에 신라 진흥왕 척경비를 세우는 과정에서 목마산성을 쌓았을 가능성이 높기 때문이다.
목마산성은 고대 창녕의 지배 세력이 비화가야에서 신라로 바뀌는 과정을 잘 보여주는 유적으로 주변의 화왕산성과 교동 송현동 고분군, 창녕 신라 진흥왕 척경비 등과 밀접한 관계가 있다.

Mongmasanseong is a stone fortress encircling the peak of Mokmasan Mountain (461 m above sea level) and a nearby valley. It is presumed it was built in the 6th century by the kingdom of Silla (57 BCE – 935 CE).
The layout of the fortress is rhombic. The northern and eastern sections of the fortress wall are well preserved. In southern section of the fortress wall a site was discovered, and it is presumed to had been the southern gate.
Mongmasanseong fortress measures about 1.9 km in perimeter, and the fortress wall measures 5.5 m in width.
영문 해설 내용
창녕 목마산성은 목마산(해발 461m) 정상부와 주변의 골짜기를 둘러 쌓은 석성이다. 6세기 중반 신라에 의해 축조된 것으로 추정된다.
산성의 평면 형태는 마름모꼴 형태이다. 북쪽과 동쪽 성벽은 원래의 모습이 잘 남아 있다. 남쪽 성벽에서는 남문으로 추정되는 터가 확인되었다.
성곽의 둘레는 약 1.9km이고, 성벽의 너비는 5.5m 내외이다.
