국문
산성은 적의 공격을 방어하기 위해 목책이나 석축 등으로 산의 정상부나 사면을 이용하여 쌓은 성으로 유사시에 활용된다.
완주 용계산성은 천등산에서 남쪽으로 뻗어 내린 산줄기를 ‘ㄷ’자형으로 감싸 축조한 포곡식(包谷式) 산성으로 총 둘레는 493m에 달한다. 험준한 절벽을 이루고 있는 동쪽 벽은 능선을 따라 외벽만 쌓았고, 다른 부분은 내외를 쌓는 협축(夾築)으로 쌓았다.
완주 용계산성은 『동국여지승람(東國與地勝覽)』 ‘고산고적조(高山古蹟條)’와 『문헌비고(文獻備考)』 ‘고산조(高山條)’에 등장하는 고대 산성으로 백제시대에 축조된 산성이라 기록되어 있다. 성의 내부에는 건물터가 자리하고 있고, 주변으로 방형의 집수정이 확인되었으며 백제~후삼국에 이르는 기와 및 토기 편들이 확인되었다.
