국문
동종은 절에서 사람을 모이게 하거나 시각을 알리기 위해 치는 종으로 범종(梵鐘)이라고도 불린다.
송광사 동종은 포탄형 몸체의 전형적인 조선 후기 종으로 높이 107㎝, 지름 73㎝이다. 종을 매다는 고리는 용이 여의주를 갖고 있는 형상이며, 그 옆으로 소리 울림을 도와주는 음통이 있다.
종의 상단에는 꽃무늬로 띠를 두르고, 구슬 모양의 돌기가 한 줄 돌려 있다. 그 밑으로는 8개의 원 안에 범자(梵字)를 새겨 넣었다. 중간 부분에는 보살 입상과 전패(殿牌) 등이 배치되어 있고, 하단부에는 덩굴 문양을 돌렸다.
송광사 동종은 종의 하단부에 새겨진 글을 통해 숙종 42년(1716)에 제작, 영조 45년(1769)에 보수하였음을 알 수 있는 종으로 조선 후기 범종사 연구에 중요한 자료로 평가된다.
