한국전쟁 직후 천주교의 전교 활동이 활발해져 신자가 비약적으로 늘어나면서 1956년 당시 제5대 광주 교구장이었던 현 해롤드(Harold Henry: S.S.C) 신부의 요청으로 일본의 까리따스 수녀회가 한국에 진출하여 나주성당에 최초의 본원을 설립하였다. 이듬해에는 최초의 지원자를 받아 최초의 지원원이 되어 한국에 뿌리내렸고, 1959년에 본원을 광주로 옮겼다.
건물은 당시 정병교의 소유였던 민가를 매입하여 개조했는데 안채(1934년 상량)는 수도자들이, 행랑채(1933년 상량)는 지원자들이 사용하였다. 2004년에 초기 수도자들의 정신을 기리기 위해 원래 모습으로 복원하여 기념관으로 공개하였고, 2010년에는 안채의 안방을 회원들의 피정과 휴식을 위해 현대식 주거 공간으로 개보수하였다.
행랑채에는 화장실과 목욕실을 설치했는데, 외부에서 군불을 지펴 무쇠 통 속의 물을 데우고 바가지로 물을 떠서 사용했던 근대 일본식 구조의 목욕실 원형이 보존되어 있다.

Former Main Convent of the Caritas Sisters (Naju Catholic Church)
These buildings served as the main convent of the Caritas Sisters from 1956 to 1959.
The Caritas Sisters began their activities in Korea in 1956 upon the invitation of the Most Rev. Harold W. Henry (1909-1976), who was serving as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Gwangju. This invitation was in response to the rapid growth in Catholic believers due to increased missionary activities directly following the Korean War (1950-1953). The main convent of the Caritas Sisters was relocated to Gwangju in 1959.
A traditional Korean residence was purchased and remodeled to accommodate the Caritas Sisters. Professed nuns occupied the former women’s quarters, while postulants occupied the former servants’quarters. To commemorate the legacy of the nuns who laid the cornerstone of the Caritas Sisters in Korea, the buildings were restored to their original condition and turned into a memorial hall in 2004. In 2010, the main room of the women’s quarters was renovated into a modern residential space that can be used by the members for retreat and rest, while a toilet and bathroom were installed in the servants’ quarters. The building also features an early 20th-century Japanese-style bathroom, where water would have been heated in a cast iron container and ladled out with gourd dippers.
