해설문

국문

선돌은 영월 방절리 서강가 절벽에 있으며 마치 큰 칼로 절벽을 쪼갠 듯한 모습이다. 높이는 약 70m 정도 되며 신선암(神仙岩)이라고도 불린다. 푸른 강물과 층암절벽이 어우러져 경관이 아름답다.

석회암에 생긴 수직의 갈라진 틈인 절리를 따라 암석이 부서져 내리면서 기둥 모양 암석만 남은 것으로 추정한다. 한편 주변 하천의 침식작용으로 석회암이 깎여 수직 절벽도 발달하였다.

단종이 영월 청령포로 가던 도중 선돌을 보고, ‘우뚝 서 있는 것이 마치 신선처럼 보인다’고 하여 ‘선돌’이 되었다는 전설이 있다.

영문

Seondol Rock, Yeongwol

Seondol Rock is a scenic rock formation located in Bangjeol-ri on the bank of the Seogang River. It consists of two cliffs reaching about 70 m in height and is also known by the name Sinseonam, meaning “The Rock of the Immortals.”

It is presumed that the pillar-shaped cliff split from the main body of the rock due to a collapse of an upright limestone stratum. Meanwhile, the vertical cliffs were formed through erosion by a stream. The blue water of the river seen through the gap in the stratified cliff creates stunning scenery.

A story says that when the sixth ruler of the Joseon period (1392-1910) King Danjong (1441-1457, r. 1452-1455) lost his throne and was exiled to Yeongwol, he once passed by this rock and remarked that it looked like a Taoist immortal standing high.
