해설문
국문
열정은 도산서당 시절부터 식수로 사용하던 우물이다. 이름은 『역경(易經)』의 ‘물이 맑고 차가우니 마실 수 있다.[井冽寒泉食]’는 구절에서 따왔다.
우물은 마을이 떠나가도 옮겨가지 못하고, 길어도 줄지 않으며, 오가는 사람 모두가 즐겨 길어 마실 수 있다. 이와 같이, 세상에 널린 지식을 부단한 노력으로 쌓아 우물과 같이 사회에 꼭 필요한 인재가 되라는 뜻을 담고 있다. 도산서당 선비들이 시원한 물을 마시며 마음을 닦는 장소로 사랑받았다.

Yeoljeong Well
This well was used as a source of drinking water since Yi Hwang established his study hall here in 1560. Its name, meaning "cold well," comes from the Book of Changes (I Ching) which describes one facet of a well as a "cold well, with frigid spring water meant for consumption."
