'''Pond and Pavilion (State Council Site)'''

This is the site of the pond and the pavilion of the State Council’s rear garden. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), most central government offices were equipped with rear gardens featuring ponds and pavilions. The pond and the pavilion of the State Council were located behind Jeongbondang and Seokhoekdang Halls. Records state that the pond full of lotus flowers was surrounded by pear trees which created an outstanding scenery. The pond also served the function of an emergency water reservoir which could be used in the case of a fire.

This is the site of the rear garden of the State Council (''Uijeongbu''), the highest government office of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

According to the excavation results, the pond measured 22.4 m along the north-south axis and 19.4 m along the east-west axis, which is about 4 meters longer along the east-west axis than the measurements provided in the historical records. Apart from the remains of the enclosure wall to the east of the pond, there is another Joseon-period stone wall slightly further away, which suggests that after the reconstruction of the complex in the 19th century, the pond was even bigger.

Archeological excavations revealed various structural remains dating from the State Council's establishment in the early Joseon period to the reconstruction of the complex in the mid-19th century. The pond was found to be rectangular in shape, measuring 22.4 m along its north-south axis and 19.4 m along its east-west axis, which was 4 m wider than historical records had suggested. An additional Joseon-period stone retaining wall was found beyond the eastern (rear) wall of the pond, suggesting that the pond was expanded during the State Council's reconstruction in the mid-19th century.
