해설문
국문
극락세계에는 칠보로 장엄하게 꾸며진 연못이 있어 그 안에 청정한 물이 가득하고, 아름다운 연꽃이 미묘한 향내를 은은하게 내뿜는다고 불경에서는 말한다. 그래서 사찰에서는 극락세계의 상징으로 연못을 만든다. 미륵사지 입구의 중앙 도로에서 동·서편에 있는 2개의 연못은 통일신라시대 초기에 당간지주, 남회랑과 함께 만들어졌다. 동쪽 연못은 동서 길이 51m, 남북 너비 48m이고, 서쪽 연못은 동서 길이 54.5m, 남북 너비 41m이다. 두 연못 사이에는 동서 너비 50.5m의 길이 있고 그 길은 남회랑 중앙 계단까지 이어진다. 서쪽 연못가에서 미륵사지를 바라보던 연못에 미륵산과 석탑 등이 비치는데, 폐허가 되기 전 주변 경관과 어우러진 미륵사의 웅장하고 아름다운 모습을 상상해 볼 수 있다.
