해설문
국문
사천 용산리 사지는 용산리 봉명산 기슭에 있던 절터이다.
기록에 따르면 눌지왕(417~457 재위)때 이 절을 세웠다고 전하며 그 당시에는 ‘봉암사’라 했으나 조선 시대 때 ‘서봉사’로 바뀌었다고 한다. ‘서봉사’에서 인쇄된 불경이 있었는데 현재 서울대학교도서관에 소장되어 있다.
광해군 6년(1614)에 의현스님이 폐허였던 절을 다시 지었는데 절의 규모가 대단히 컸다고 전한다. 절이 있었던 곳에는 절터임을 알려 주는 주춧돌, 축대*, 우물 등이 남아 있다.
현재는 차밭으로 개간되었다.

이곳에 있던 사찰은 5세기 중엽에 봉암사라는 이름으로 창건되었다. 이후 조선시대에 서봉사로 이름이 바뀌었고, 17세기에 중창되었으며, 절의 규모가 대단히 컸다고 한다.
