해설문
국문
별망성은 조선 초기에 해안으로 침입하는 외적을 방어하기 위하여 돌로 쌓아 만든 해안산성이다. 이 성은 야산의 능선을 연결하고 남쪽으로 해안에 연접시켜 평지를 감싸 안으며 선박의 출입이 가능하도록 한 해안 평산성(平山城)이다. 세종대의 기록에 이곳에 수군만호영(水軍萬戶營)이 설치되어 있었다고 하는 것으로 보아 15세기 이전에 이미 축성된 것으로 보인다. 이곳에 있던 초지량영(草芝梁營)은 조선 효종 7년(1656)에 강화도로 옮겨가면서 폐지되었다.
성의 크기는 둘레가 1,040m 이고 높이가 1.2~2.1m 라는 옛 기록이 있지만, 6.25 전쟁 때 대부분 파괴되어 1988년에 복원하였다. 현재의 성벽은 복원된 것으로 길이 225m, 높이 1.45m이며, 성벽의 바깥은 돌을 수직에 가깝도록 쌓았고 안쪽은 완만하게 흙을 다져 놓은 상태이다. 성에는 곳곳에 군대가 머물렀던 60 안팎의 편평한 터가 있는데 그 언저리에는 자기와 기와 조각이 많이 흩어져 있다. 17세기 중엽에 폐기되기까지 약 250년간 서해안의 방어를 위해 사용된 중요한 성이었다.
별망성이란 명칭은 초지량영의 별망군(別望軍)들이 주둔하던 망루가 있었던 데에서 유래한다.
